First News, which launches on May 5, will target a core readership of nine- to 12-year-olds with a mix of current affairs, sport, science and showbusiness news, which the editorial team say will be tailored for a young, but inquisitive audience.
The title, which will have an initial print run of 300,000, is being coordinated by former Daily Mirror editor, Piers Morgan, who is editorial director. Editor Nicky Cox was previously editorial director of BBC Worldwide's family division and was behind another children's newspaper Early Times.
Cox said: "I first had the idea for a national children's newspaper years ago and I am so excited it is actually happening. This is a unique product, there is nothing like it on the market at the moment.
"We are well aware of importance of getting the editorial style right. Children must think of First News as fun, exciting and cool."
It is expected that First News will unveil a number of high-profile celebrity contributors between now and its May launch date.
The financial backing for First News has been provided by Steve and Sarah Jane Thomson, founders and CEO's of Thomson Intermedia.
