Did anyone else read \link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1750530,00.html\this} ?

It made some interesting points I think, because I worry too about what society is saying about weight to our young girls.

when i was a school, i weighed under 7st, and was very thin. so much so, that 'don't run too fast, your legs will snap' was commonly aimed towards me. i was embarressed to be so small, didn't have an eating disorder or anything like that, just naturally thin. it was a huge relief to me when, at the age of about 23, i suddenly went up to a more healthier weight.

how times have changed, i can't believe now, how much thin celebrities are thrust under people's noses and said to look great, when they actually look ill.

there was a programme on living tv last week called 'skinny celebrities'. one expert worked out some life expectancies based on what they've done to their bodies with crash dieting. two of the people to come up as the worst were victoria beckham and renee zellwegger, both with a life expectancy of around 54/55yrs Shock

is size 16 'Fat and I mean Fat' ?

motherinferior · 11/04/2006 20:06

I liked it (and emailed the writer to say so!). I was quite fat as a child and I really worry about how I should deal with it if my daughters get fatter.

motherinferior · 11/04/2006 20:07

And size 16 is pretty fat for a teenager, I think. I was a size 12 and was much chunkier than most of my friends.

I hate the fact that younger and younger girls are diagnosed with eating disorders and I am so scared for my dd (only 1yo yet). I f*king hate this 'must be thin and beautiful' attitude. A lot of these models look dreadful in RL - so much airbrushing goes on in photos that the ideal is impossible to attain even for naturally gorgeous and slim women. The fashion industry has a lot to answer for but so do we as a society. We make the 'celebrities' famous by reading all the trash written about them. I couldn't give a flying f*k about them all and I just pray my dd will have the same attitude.

No I wouldn't have thought so unless she's very short.

motherinferior · 11/04/2006 20:10

Most of the women I know were slender little rakes at 15, whatever size they are now. It always makes me feel peculiarly paranoid, actually.

cataloguequeen · 11/04/2006 20:13

I was I size 12 at my largest when I was a teenager and I never felt fat or looked fat at all!!this is def. cultural...
