Sad and those 34 years are full of miserySad

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/04/2006 11:09

Bloody awful isn't it?

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 11:17

I know I saw that the other day, nearly cried, Zimbabwe has the lowest life expectancy in the world now, and it's not even just down to AIDS - as rates of that have recently dropped ever so slightly Sad

hulababy · 10/04/2006 11:17

That is so terrible :(

Jackstini · 10/04/2006 11:23

Awful. 34 is my age next birthday and I have taken it for granted I am about halfway through my life. Really makes you think. Sad

moondog · 10/04/2006 12:03

It's a fucking disgrace isn't it??
God Mugabe will surely rot in hell.
Heard this yesterday on the radio and tohught about it all day.
Weep for the poor bastards.

milward · 10/04/2006 12:21

read in the paper about all the advances to keep people alive for longer - just thought what about those who don't have the opportunity to live just a usual life span & to be have all they need. This is what should be being sorted out - not keeping the rich on the golf course for longer - imho.

monkey · 10/04/2006 12:53

it's really frightening isn't it? 34. People here are shocked when someone dies when they're 'only' 60 or whatever. We take so much for granted. And that's an average. So many many peopel must be dying quite a bit younger. So many kids without parents Sad

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 13:07

\link{http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/4890508.stm\here} is the article which goes into more details. Men's life expectancy is only 37. And women's life expectancy has fallen by 2yrs in the last 12 months Sad.

I can't believe that just 9yrs ago when I was out there live expectancy was nearly double that - at around 60(ish)yrs (can't remember exact figure - but remember thinking it wasn't bad considering our own in the uk is in the 70's.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 13:13

and \link{http://www.zwnews.com/issuefull.cfm?ArticleID=14174\here} Mugabe's cronies are denying the reports.....

speedymama · 10/04/2006 13:18

HRHQQ, when you lived there, was the life expectancy you quoted for everyone or just the whites?

Agree Mugabe and his cronies have a lot to answer for and I can't understand why the people keep electing him, if the results at the election are to be believed.

and looking into it further I wouldn't be suprised if those figures have dropped again - they are the most 'recent' figures - from 1994!!!!

From the table

Zimbabwe

Total Population - 13million
Dependency Ratio - 79 (per 100)
% of Population aged 60+yrs - 5.4
Under 5 mortality rate - 129 (per 1000)

UK

Total Population - 60million
Depedency Ratio - 52 (per 100)
% of Population aged 60+yrs - 21
Under 5 mortality rate - 6 (per 1000)

and from other sources on the economic front

Zimbabwe Inflation - 913% (on Friday)
UK Inflation - 2.7%

Zimbabwe Unemployment - 70%
UK Unemployment - 5.1%

Angry - I really must stop reading the Zim news it just makes me so angry and sad all at the same time especially when I then hear people complaining of how 'hard' it is here in the UK.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 13:34

speedy - it was for everyone. 1997 was one of the best years for the Zimbabwe economy. They were supplying grain to the rest of Southern Africa - and still having plenty of reserves for themselves.

Relations between the different races were great, food and accomdation was still cheap, petrol was cheap, beer (and cigarettes) were cheap - life was good for most (although obviously the number below the poverty line was greater than here in the UK they were by 'developing countries' standards doing very well.

speedymama · 10/04/2006 13:37

70% unemploymentShockAngry. I wonder how many people are migrating to other countries like South Africa for work? Doesn't President Mbeki have any influence over the maniacal Mugabe? How can they just allow the people to suffer like this?Angry (and it is always the poor and dispossess who suffer)

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 13:44

a lot are speedy - many illegaly - infact last year the SA goverment says they 'repatriated' 97,000 illegal immigrants.

There have been estimates of up to 2 millions living (both legally and legally) in SA.

And there are liteally 100k's in the UK - DH is a TV licence officer visiting up to 60 houses a day and every day he comes home and says he met more Zimbabweans - and that's just in Northamptonshire!

winnie · 10/04/2006 14:00

Shock Sad

grannygoose · 10/04/2006 15:11

It's disgusting ... I am ashamed that Mbeki isnt doing more!

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 18:02

well it would be good if Mbeki would do anything - instead 2yrs ago he was fighting to allow Zimbabwe back into the Commonwealth........

MissChief · 10/04/2006 18:06

my God, HRH - terrible infant mortality rates, and that in a country which used to have such a relatively strong infrastructure and health system!

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/04/2006 22:56

horrible isn't it Sad
