Crocodile baby dangler

Oh my lord, did anyone else see crocodile expert Steve Irwin dangling his 1 month old son in front of a croc? And 'walking' him to the crododiles' pool? This has to be the sickest publicity stunt ever.

As well as the apparently dangers I also wondered if he would transfer salmonella from the chicken to the baby. Not very hygienic, is it, to handle a baby and a dead creature at the same time??

Okay, I said tarantula as I didn't realise there would be so many spider opinions. Geez!

Whatever spider it was (they were filming in the Australian desert, the thing was the size of the mothers hands and they said it was poisonous but harmless. Hmmmm. So whatever kind of spider it was it wasn't a cutesy little bitty money spider!

Regardless of if the spider is poisonous or not, the bite still hurts. I speak from experience when I lived in US a few years ago and got bitten in the finger by a nasty 1" long bugger the whole finger swelled up and was damn, damn sore, I wouldn't like any child to go through that.

One month old and Steve wasn't exactly supporting his head either...oh Steve.

Seeing the film of the encounter, and even though the child didn't seem at all distressed by what I thought was pretty rough handling, I thought he was treating his son like an accessory for his 'act' - waving him at the crowd, using the child's risk to fire up the audience etc - and that was pretty repulsive. People who know animals inside out and who have worked with them for most of their lives still get mauled and killed by them on a reasonably regular basis. Animals are unpredictable and while I think anyone has the right to risk their own life and limbs, they don't IMO have the right to expose their small child to pointless risk.

I was really suprised by how calm the baby was, actually.

emmatmg · 04/01/2004 08:42

I saw his interview this morning when he said that his children have to be croc savvy as they live with 35 yrds of them.

Well I sincerely hope he doesn't expect his children to be alone in the enclosures with them......I'm sure all the visits to his park don't have to be croc savvy to watch from OUTSIDE the enclosure.

I repeat what I said earlier......he's a prick, I've always thought he was and this just confirms it!

Angeliz · 04/01/2004 12:29

i think he's disgusting, used his child as a publicity stunt and people like him and Michael Jackson should be looked at straight away regarding their ability to take care of their children! (as i'm sure any "normal" person would be if they dangled their baby from a balcony or infront of a crocodile!)
They make me sick!

zebra · 04/01/2004 12:34

I'm sorry, but a 1month old isn't capable of being savvy about anything!!

pie · 04/01/2004 12:39

ITA zebra!!

1 month old is not capable of having a 'wonderful sensory experience' (Terri's words) other than a teat or nipple in his little mouth. For heaven's sake he can't see anything further than 6 inches!!!

Did anyone hear that stuff about the only way something bad would have happened is if a meteor has hit him??? Hello???

his job is dangerous, yes his children will have to learn about crocs, but I mean you wouldn't expect a firefighter to take his 1 month old to work because fire is everywhere and his dad knows what he is doing. Sheesshh!

handlemecarefully · 05/01/2004 11:44

Arrest the freak!!!!!

FairyMum · 05/01/2004 11:56

I hope the crocodile eats him soon. what a stupid man! Would be the only way to keep his kids safe I expect....

fio2 · 05/01/2004 11:56

sorry but i laughed at it

eidsvold · 05/01/2004 20:00

I have lost virtually all respect for the guy, to be honest.

bobthebaby · 05/01/2004 20:21

Someone should tell Steve that when you are in a hole you stop digging.

Also he did his "meet baby Bob" interview in hospital, demonstrating he isn't averse to the odd bit of publicity and then moans when the press use the best camera angle for their story.

And I stand by my earlier post - all the camera angles in the world did not conceal a sun hat.

What on earth has the war got to do with anything? I'm not sure the ANZACs were defending the right of all Australians to take a baby to work with them.

I hope baby Bob decides he hates animals and becomes a hairdresser or something.

My Bob has temporarily become Robert to people who ask his name as I am sick of crocodile jokes.

Paula71 · 05/01/2004 20:59

Or baby Bob could join the world of fashion and stun them with his lovely crocodile skin handbags and shoes!

suzywong · 05/01/2004 21:02

LOL Paula
thar's jusy what i was thinking
