I know!!! I watched it live on the Internet and could not believe it when he actually jumped! Absolutely freakin' amazing!

ridiculoussingle · 15/10/2012 11:52

watched it live too. Amazing! Can you imagine, just leaping off into 24 miles of atmosphere!! :D

EnjoyVampirebloodResponsibly · 15/10/2012 11:56

I'm totally torn: is it a "great leap for mankind moment" or "look you go fucking fast if you jump from a capsule that high up?"

He was super-sweet in his interview: you have to go that high to realise you are so small.

My heart was in my mouth fr his mum though.

willyoulistentome · 15/10/2012 12:01

I know. Amazing and all, but speaking purely from the Mum's point of view I think I would be furious at my sons if they did that to me.

We watched it live on the internet and when he started to spin, I felt sick!

fishandlilacs · 15/10/2012 12:04

it was awesome-we let dd age 5 stay up a little bit late to watch. It was amazing.

The bit where he was spinning and we could no longer hear his breathing scared me to bits though.

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 15/10/2012 12:27

And then he landed on his feet.

Incredible!

His mum was watching and seemed to be surprisingly ok. We watched with our children and I told them I never ever wanted them to do anything that dangerous ever

PoppadomPreach · 15/10/2012 12:47

vampire;

"look you go fucking fast if you jump from a capsule that high up?"

You could take that view, but the point is that it is very difficult to do without dying. I think it was an amazing achievement; not only by felix, but also by the engineering team around him.

It was spectacular tv!

naturalbaby · 15/10/2012 12:51

we all watched every second yesterday...this morning my 20 month old is jumping off the top of the slide shouting "un, oo, weeeeeeeeeeee!"

Jumping.

He is standing on the top of the slide and jumping down it.
Hmm

back to cbeebies viewing today then.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 15/10/2012 12:53

Can someone scientific explain to me how they knew where he was going to land? I mean the world looked tiny from his head cam when he jumped.

straighttohellymelly · 15/10/2012 13:13

That youtube link is hilarious.

Dh and ds1 watched it while I was putting ds2 to bed. I've just watched it now and it made me cry. The man is clearly insane.

notjustamummythankyou · 15/10/2012 14:02

twelve - that's what I thought!

AND he landed on his feet when he touched down, like it was all no bother at all.

Amazing and utterly crazy in equal measure.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/10/2012 14:05

Amazing wasn't it?

When he went into a spin my heart was in my mouth.

out2lunch · 15/10/2012 14:22

yes almost unbelievable how they knew where he was going to land and how did they film him all the way down?

QuenelleIsOrangeAndGoldForNow · 15/10/2012 14:32

I was shouting ?Don't do it!? When was sitting in the capsule looking down at Earth. I was so frightened for him.

And then he landed as if he'd just stepped off a kerb. Incredible.

He is remarkably brave and his team are brilliant engineers.

kaytola · 15/10/2012 16:09

I watched it live on the news. It was probably one of the best things I've ever seen. Terrifying when he went into the flat spin but to land on his feet was just incredible. Absolutely awe inspiring. Beat that, world!

MirrorballMoon · 15/10/2012 16:45

I watched live too and was screaming as he jumped from the capsule! One of the scariest and most incredible things I've ever seen.

jennycrofter · 15/10/2012 17:11

Amazing. I was completely torn between insisting the DCs watched it because it was so awesome, and being terrified something was going to go wrong, and they'd be scarred for life.

They were also told that under no circumstances whatsoever are they to do anything like that. Grin

Spatsky · 15/10/2012 17:14

Twelve, i would assume he goes straight up and he comes straight down ergo he lands as close to where he lifted off, taking into account the minimal wind factor in the balloon, but they deliberately did this on a day with minimal wind.

Don't know what was used to film the descent so well though.

Mum looked terrified I thought. I'm not sure I would have been ale to watch it live, proud as. Would be.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 15/10/2012 17:17

I was thinking this Spat, but he was 23 miles up, and you must go through some massively windy bits up that high, jet-streams and wot-not, so even if his trajectory was 1 degree off surely he could've ended up in Mongolia or the middle of the Pacific or somewhere...
