"Nice idea, but where's the proof?
By Nigel Hawkes

THE fish oil shibboleth is only the latest to be overturned in recent years. Vitamin supplements and fibre have also been found to provide no benefits.
Theories often start with a random observation. Inuits, for example, have little heart disease and eat fish. Eureka!

The next stage, usually, is a case-control study in which the diets of those with heart disease are compared with those who are healthy. But there are normally so many other differences between the two groups that the results look a lot more persuasive than they are.

Worse, only the positive findings are published, building up a literature that emphasises beneficial findings and ignores the rest. This is called publication bias.

Only when randomised control trials (RCTs) are held does the emperor turn out to be wearing no clothes. A properly run RCT has two matched groups, followed for as long as possible, one taking pills and one a placebo.

But even RCTs are subject to random error. Combining them in a “meta-analysis” smoothes out the errors, although it does not eliminate publication bias. A single positive or negative study, if it is big, can swing the result.

So the normal life-cycle of a hypothesis is to start with a nice idea, confirm it using a poor evidence base, create a dietary fad sufficient to justify proper trials — then find it was never true to start with."

I'm sure there will be some research soon saying that most vitamins people take are actually no good or do harm

Fish oils have made a massive difference to my anxirty and depression. And the research covered in todays papers didn't say they didn't help kids with brain power - it wasn't looking at that.

Mercy · 24/03/2006 11:30

Have a look at

Mum2Ela · 24/03/2006 11:33

Have been reading a fab book about depression for my Reflexology course and the whole book talks about essential fatty acids (omega 3's and 6's) and how a decent daily supply of these can decrease the incidence and symptoms of depression. But you need a daily dose. Now you shouldn't eat fish every day (heave metals etc), so supplements (or lots of the apropriate seeds) are thus good.

Don't knock it, I say.

Blu · 24/03/2006 11:38

CarolinaMoon · 24/03/2006 14:10

you can eat freshwater fish and sardines etc every day (if you want to, bit barftastic IMHO) I think.

Tis only the deep sea fish that are full of mercury isn't it?

Pitie · 24/03/2006 14:15

Girls and women should only have 2 portions of oily fish per week. Please, please see link I did further down - it's important!

(am Mercy in Frencch disguise)

mavaleurdupencedeux · 24/03/2006 14:24

nope, cod, im not stopping. i buy a suppliment for my kids that is 3, 6 & 9 and i really can see a difference since they have been on it!

i am not going to dismiss the proof of my own eyes based on someone's artice in the times!

How many times have we seen this before?

its good for you - have loads, oops we were wrong it will kill you, have none, oh new research suggests it is good if you have x but bad if you have y, oh, bit more info, it does this good thing but causes this bad thing.......

in a month some new research will either tell us fish oils increase your iq to 5000, or turn you purple and i'll still keep my kids on them because the results i see with my own eyes mean more to me than a 'study' which, quite frankly, will tell the researcher exactly what they set out to have it tell them!

Blu · 24/03/2006 14:36

(m2pw - shouldn't you be converted into Euros?)

m2pw - yes, the study Cod is on about is about heart disease, not iq, calmness, etc.

mavaleurdueurodeux · 24/03/2006 14:55

oops, of course i should! ta blu!
