Did anybody read in the paper yesterday that this year will apparently be the last time we Spring Forward and Fall Back. Apparently we will Loose an Hour on Sunday and then not gain an hour in October and then loose another hour next year.

Really? Why?

lazymoo · 21/03/2006 10:45

I don't really know, but I suppose we only needed to have our an extra hour in the morning so the farmers had more time to harvest their crops in years gone by. Apparently they will try this for a few years and then see what everbody thinks and if we don't like it they will go back to 'normal'

hurray! If that's true.

Callisto · 21/03/2006 10:48

Don't like losing an hour in bed ever so it is good from that perspective. But why an hour next year as well?

lazymoo · 21/03/2006 10:55

I don't know it is just what I read, my FIL has just come around and says that: this was tried last year as well but the Law Lords threw it out, but they reckon it will get in this time.

after reading the reports from last year, wouldn't hold my breath. They don't seem interested in it.

What a lot of wordy words! will someone translate all that please?

Enid · 21/03/2006 14:15

it says there are no plans to change it

Enid · 21/03/2006 14:16

sounds like anti-eu hysteria to me

('they are making us change our TIME!!' etc etc)

Lucycat · 21/03/2006 14:17

Thanks Enid - the words just all blended together when i tried to read it! Blush

NewLP · 21/03/2006 14:43

Yeah – but it’s dated 2003

jellyjelly · 22/03/2006 10:16

Could be me being a bit dim but what would that actually mean for us? Does it get lighter or stay lighter for longer?

TinyGang · 22/03/2006 10:42

I get really confused about all this too. Is that called double Summer time or something?

Is the thinking that it will be lighter in the winter months at peak travelling times of the day and will therefore be safer, especially noticable in the north of England and Scotland?

NotQuiteCockney · 22/03/2006 10:52

The argument for going to summer time and not coming back, is this: in the winter, we can either choose to have it dark for the morning rush hour or the evening rush hour. People are tired and stupid in the evening rush hour, so we should have it be dark for the morning rush hour.

Lots more people get run over when the time shifts back, because of people being dark and stupid in the evening.

I don't know if this is being changed, though.

Nightynight · 22/03/2006 11:11

is UK changing to European time? (am completely dyslexic about figuring it out)
didnt we try that in 1971, I remember arriving at school in the dark.

biglips · 22/03/2006 11:11

British summer time starts on mothering sunday (26) BUT last weekend (18) was the starts of Spring time

does that mean that we only had a week of Spring??!!

Bozza · 22/03/2006 11:20

According to that link nothing is changing other than the usual which we already expecting. Hour forward this w/e, then an hour back at the end of Oct.

What is this springtime thing? It was the spring equinox, wasn't it? But totally unrelated to summertime.

TinyGang · 22/03/2006 11:24

Time changing around was ok in the old days when you just moved the hands on a clock. Now it involves digging out the instructions for things and swearing a lotBlush

TinyGang · 22/03/2006 11:31

The equinox is when there are exactly 12 hours of sun up and sun down. The tide also is at it's highest I think.

BudaBabe · 22/03/2006 11:41

Don't think it's anything to do with The EU or European time as our clocks will change this weekend too.

I had no idea last year and almost missed a flight!!

lazymoo · 22/03/2006 12:56

I definately read this in an article on Monday, but I can't find a link.

But, try reading this\link www.jonfry.com/2005/10/end-of-british-summer-time.html}
