He was 82.

I feel sad even though I didn't know him. He always seemed so modest.

Blush though as I always thought he was one of us, ie English.

Oh no. Sad That's really sad. I didn't think he was that old TBH.

Lifeissweet · 25/08/2012 20:33

That is such a shame. I spent a term with my year 5 class learning about space and we did loads of work on the moonlandings - reading articles, watching film, writing accounts from his point of view. He always came across as so humble and it was a truly amazing achievement.

Sparklingbrook · 25/08/2012 20:35

I can't get my head round it. He has been on the Moon and now he isn't here any more, and we don't have people going to the moon any more. Sad

JustFabulous · 25/08/2012 20:36

It must have been amazing to have him as your father and grandfather.

RIP Neil. What you did was amazing.

(The other day DD said she wants to be the first person on Mars.)

Sad and I feel weird too.My DH said it is because he is part of our personal histories.
He sounded like he was a lovely chap.

Sparklingbrook · 25/08/2012 20:41

I hope he gets a spectacular send off.

BestIsWest · 25/08/2012 20:47

I feel sad too. We were at the Kennedy Space Centre last month and IDH and I were totally amazed and awe struck by it all. The bravery of those men going off into the unknown. RIP

Pedallleur · 25/08/2012 21:48

You think of the bravery but I actually met someone who had been in space (shuttle missions/spacewalk) and worked for NASA. He was a Marine and helicopter pilot by training and had complete faith in the teams that got him into space and back (plus he understood the engineering) although in Armstrongs time it was more guess-work and calculations with slide-rules

NovackNGood · 26/08/2012 01:21

What did he die of?

TodaysAGoodDay · 26/08/2012 01:31

Oh, that's so sad, he was one of my heros when I was young (yes, I'm quite old now)
RIP Neil x

GaryTankCommander · 26/08/2012 08:03

I am so sad to hear this...

RIP Neil Armstrong.

JustFabulous · 26/08/2012 12:42

Very moving account of what would happen if the moon landings had failed.

It's sad to hear about the death of Neil Armstrong because he was one of those rare things, someone who achieved fame by doing something genuinely remarkable. You can look to Armstrong and those alongside him as fantastic examples of people that went beyond the normal limits of human endeavour and they will shake their heads back at you and say thanks but they were just doing their job. In a world of vacuous 'celebrities', when we lose a real hero, we're all poorer.

GaryTankCommander · 27/08/2012 13:34

Well said Cogito...
