BBC news

I have emailed them to say the "dead" headline is awful. "Has died" would be much more respectable.

I am sorry for his family but also understand the relief they may feel as they know it is what he wanted.

I hope he is at peace now

slowlygoingbonkers · 22/08/2012 12:23

I've just heard about this. I hope he is at peace now. The pictures of him receiving the news that his case had been denied were heart breakingSad

janey68 · 22/08/2012 12:26

It was awful seeing his utter distress at being denied the chance to end his life at a time of his choosing. My sympathy to his family, though it must be a relief that his release came soon after his bid for freedom from suffering

boschy · 22/08/2012 12:30

oh thank god. that poor man.... and his family. death isnt always the worst thing, IMO

Portofino · 22/08/2012 12:32

RIP Tony Sad

CiderwithBuda · 22/08/2012 12:53

Gosh. Poor poor man. I hope he is finally at peace.

His family must be so relieved whilst also so sad.

sittinginthesun · 22/08/2012 12:53

Just read this too. Thoughts with his family.

Emmielu · 22/08/2012 13:13

I just saw this too. Poor man. :( He fought so so hard.

JustFabulous · 22/08/2012 13:20

On the news it was reported he had just given up. I don't think anyone would blame him.

On BBC Breakfast they had a piece with a couple where the man had suffered a massive stroke and was diagnoised with LIS and they were both happy with their lives. Everyone is so different.

Thinking of his family today xxx

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/08/2012 13:53

very sad that he was forced to starve himself to death. The end could have been so much more peaceful for him.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2012 13:54

Bloody hell, that poor man

How he must have suffered Sad

SomebodySaveMe · 22/08/2012 13:55

I've never felt relieved to hear of a death before but I really am. RIP Tony.

SerialKipper · 22/08/2012 13:57

If " just giving up" were enough, there would be no need for assistance to end one's life.

Sorry, I know it's a tiny bit of semantics. But it perpetrates the idea that one can control when one dies just by will power. You can't - that's the whole point of the debate.

I really hope his medical team/GP was sedating/pain relieving him adequately

starving yourself is painful and he would have suffered, otherwise

ColouringIn · 22/08/2012 14:43

I would imagine that his medical team WOULD have been allowed to relieve any pain etc. I know that years ago in an elderly care ward we gave pain relief for anything which caused pain. It was understood that some times this might shorten ampatient's life.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2012 14:48

yes, I think so too

JustFabulous · 22/08/2012 17:04

I keep sobbing and I feel so stupid. I don't know TN or his family but seeing his heartbreak at losing his court case just really got to me.

On the news they just said "it would have involved a major change in the law." Is that a good enough reason for them to say no or is it just the court isn't high enough for them to rule, and if that is the case, why couldn't they go straight to the higher court?

I knowJustFab, I have shed a few tears for him too

I think lots of people have

poor, poor man and poor, poor family

seeing such suffering is terrible, but to have to live with it ? Unimaginable.

JustFabulous · 22/08/2012 17:49

Animals are protected from living a life that is deemed intolerable and they don't even have a say. Why are humans made to suffer?

hoodoo12345 · 22/08/2012 17:52

When i first heard about it today my first thought was, "good for him", glad he is at peace now.

suedpantsoffem · 22/08/2012 17:53

JustFabulous - why is it disrespectful to say someone is dead? And why is it better to say they've died?

pumpkinsweetie · 22/08/2012 17:55

I hope he is at peace now, rip Tony.
His family although upset must be relieved his suffering has ended Sad

JustFabulous · 22/08/2012 18:08

I just think "is dead" is harsh and "has died" seems better, softer, more personal.
