Wow, that amazing.

its a nice thing to do but i dont actually get it - she functions as a 3 month old and loves being outdoors - so why not go and lay down in a wonderful woodland on a sunny day and let her watch the leaves in the breeze, or take her to the beach and let her lay in the water - why the triathlon?
i think he is a glory seeker - no problem with that and good for him, but dont kid on that its for his dd that he does it.

DoItOnce · 16/08/2012 09:03

Oh, didn't read the article properly. I see what you are saying. I guesshe is spending time with her and that he wouldn't do it if she didn't like it.

I also think he is just doing something HE enjoys and it happens that she enjoys it too.

We like taking long walks and my DD comes with us in her buggy, but we don't kid ourselves that we do it just out of altruism, for HER, it's something we happen to all enjoy.

however it is a nice story and it's great they are all happy :)

something about this story annoys me.
tbh it seems a bit like a "look at me"
most parents who have been caring for that long can barely lift their child.
so yes he is fit, super dad .....no

NPPF · 16/08/2012 17:58

Well done him! :)

One day a son asks his father:
"Dad, will you run the marathon with me?"
The father answers yes and both run their first marathon together.
One day, the son asks his father if he wants to run the marathon with him again and the father answers yes.
They both run the marathon together again.
Then one day the son asks his father:
"Dad, will you run the Ironman with me?" (The Ironman is the toughest...it requires a 4km swim, 180km biking and 42km running).

The father takes his son?s face in his hands, looks him straight in the eyes and says?NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP US.

sorry but the idea that these men are the greatest dads ever is what I think annoys me, just because they are sporty.
think of the dads(yes like my dh) who care for their severely disabled children every day, but are not sporty,

BoneyBackJefferson · 16/08/2012 23:45

ok

take out the sport and ask what drives them to do what they do.

SparkyUK · 17/08/2012 00:21

But couldn't you say the opposite? Take out the child and ask them what motivates them? I think they'd still be running triathlons etc.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/08/2012 00:38

In Team Hoyt's case it was the son (Rick) that asked the father (Dick) to run the marathon. Rick has a machine that allows him to speak.
Read here
I could go on but its better if you read it, but as Rick Hoyt's first words were "Go, Bruins!" he was in to sprt already.

As for the Mail story I don't know what the drive is but I suspect that it is a love for his DD and not for the spot light.

For some posters on here it is far to easy to find something dark behind it.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/08/2012 00:41

I would also say in both the cases that given the circumstances that it would be impossible to remove the child from the situation.
