what a lovely story

My son's life was changed by the generosity of an anonymous mumsnetter (who bought him a very expensive communication aid) so I know what a difference these acts of kindness can make. Made me well up.

Great story. I am very glad that that couple won the lottery and chose to spend some of the money on such a great thing.

He looks so unfazed even as he's picked up. What a lovely boy.

Jimjams, I am so glad that someone helped with buying your DS's communication device.

So am I duchesse :) ds1 comes out with the most amazing stuff now, and his communication aid is getting to be glued to his side constantly.

There are good people in the world :)

I've always thought the most amazing thing about winning the lottery would be able to quietly step in and help out not big causes but things like, where you would hear someone's house had been robbed just before Christmas, or a child needed medical help or those kind of things.

I actually understand that Simon Cowell does this very thing - he insists on no publicity but gives away lots of money especially to families with sick children to help with overseas treatment or respite care etc.

What a wonderful story Smile

OP How wonderful that someone stepped in for you too. People can be amazing.

Jimjams: your story and updates I receive about ds1 make me well up every time.

It seems hopelessly naive to say that finance shouldn't be an obstacle to these children having the support, equipment and facilities that they need; because of course money is an obstacle and always will be an obstacle. But it isn't fair.

saintlyjimjams · 02/08/2012 08:23

I agree roisin. I have huge plans for the multi-millions I am going to win on the euros one day Grin (seriously though - what an opportunity).

At the moment I have to work full time but when I can cut back a bit I do want to look into whether there's any point setting up a communication aid charity, just because it has been so amazing for ds1. Actually not just ds1, I'm in contact with a couple of others who have started on the vantage lite as well - and in one case in particular it seems to have just unlocked communication as well - although they are currently seeking funding. In some ways I think funding is going to get harder for communication aids because the question is always 'why can't he use an iPad?' (cheap). My answer is 'i don't know', but in ds1's case he couldn't - we tried several apps and he either wouldn't or couldn't use them whereas he's just flying with the vantage lite. it seems to speak his language (and ours too luckily).

One thing I have managed to secure funding for (for others) is regular surfing for kids with severe learning disabilities. I rarely praise our council, but they really have been very supportive with that, and seeing the kids out there doing and loving an activity you would never imagine would be open to them is very well up city as well.

I have VERY big plans for my euro millions win! Grin

Aw jimjams you are the sort of person I hope wins the lottery Smile but you know what, even if you don't, i know you will make a difference anyway. x

saintlyjimjams · 02/08/2012 13:01

Elephants - don't you will make me weep!

I think buying one off items is the sort of thing the beckhams childrens charity does as well. Good for them!
