Tessa Jowell splits with husband, believe it?

The cynic in me says as they've been married 27 years she's trying to save her job and they think it's the only way to do it.

Anyone persuade me otherwise?

even if the split was real this episode shows up her serious inadequacies as a politician.

Tinker · 05/03/2006 19:16

I can't see how she was attracted to him in the first place since his career is based on sailing close to the wind tax dodges. Seems incompatible with being a leftie. Didn't know they were both married when met so he could be smooth-talker or "saved" her from a loveless first marriage?

Tinker · 05/03/2006 19:18

Just read DC's post and agree with that.

DominiConnor · 06/03/2006 16:40

Do you work for the government, DC?
Used to do consultancy for HM Treasury, at one point I was apparently the most expensive person (per hour) employed by the Brtish government.

ruty · 06/03/2006 17:10

lucky you DC!

turniphead · 06/03/2006 17:42

let's say for a minute that Tessa knew nothing about mortgages, back-handers whatever - she's be bl**dy furious about what her dh has put her through - but D-I-V-O-R-C-E???

Unless there were serious problems prior to monetary goings out I doubt you would get divorced over it.

turniphead · 06/03/2006 17:42

'goings on'!!!

DominiConnor · 06/03/2006 21:26

If her story is true, then this bloke has lied to her at great length, any times, tricked her, and put her in a position where she may well face criminal prosecution. Her career may be destroyed, and she's been publicly humilliated.
These things often have phases. I'd bet that when it started in the media she checked with him that everything was kosher, and I bet he lied again.
This process may have been repeated until even Mrs. Jowell finally realised how crap he was.

I know quite a few people who would prefer he'd merely screwed her best friend whilst drunk, rather than a decade of deceit.

Divorce does not strike me as an over reaction, maybe a knife in the throat would be excessive, but I could swing either way on that.

TwoIfBySea · 06/03/2006 21:26

Not for one minute do I believe it, she is just trying to save herself.

UCM · 06/03/2006 23:06

Well, even if she was innoccent of the money in her bank account, SHE should not be in a position of power. It just proves it all along. This party are out for the likes of you and me, not. They are all making money for themselves and not even worrying about us. IT MAKES ME SICK. And I think that the other partys are just the same anyway.

notasheep · 06/03/2006 23:22

Alistair Campbell has organised it!!!
She will be back soon after a temporary secondment!

DominiConnor · 07/03/2006 11:23

I'm suprised to find myself in such a tiny minority.
I think Mrs. Jowell is guilty of little more than believing the man she loved.
I am not a fan of new Labour, and despair that the intellectual quality of the Labour women is so low.

But the thing that worries me about the Blair Babes is not their dishonesty but their craven acceptance of what men tell them. They put loyalty above integrity, and aside from Ruth Kelly are frankly not that bright. Even Kelly is pretty awful, her loyalty to paedophiles is not exactly a positive position.
And don't get me started on Dawn Primarollo, the dumbest person in government.

ruty · 07/03/2006 13:07

ruth kelly for all her academic reputation always sounds frightened, awkward and not that clever at all.

paolosgirl · 07/03/2006 13:11

Ruth Kelly is the secret love child of Anne Widdecombe and Frank Dobson - didn't you know? Grin

ruty · 07/03/2006 13:48

lol paolosgirl!

Piffle · 07/03/2006 14:02

Much as I like to by cynical I thought baout it this way.
If I had a really high powered career in politics and had been married for several years to a financial man, I'd have likely said, oh yeah I'll sign that, what's that for, oh ok. And I would (having married him and had kid with him) have trusted him totally
My gut instinct looking at her face now, is that she figured it out too late, tried to save it and then, given the massive breach of trust, had no option but to separate until DM can be absolved/acquitted etc of any wrongdoing.
I'm not sure many people would choose their job over someone who they truly truly trusted and knew beyond the word that they had told the truth.

OldieMum · 07/03/2006 15:37

I know someone who taught Ruth Kelly at uni - he didn't think she was anything special academically.

DominiConnor · 08/03/2006 12:06

Indeed, it's a sad combination of extreme religious delusion, a weak personality and an inability to distinguish between love of god and the rape of children.

ruty · 08/03/2006 12:08

sounds just up Tony Blair's street.
