Dangerous nappies??

Why is there only a small comment in this article about the nappies?
www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2174774/My-children-taken-away-months-burst-nappy-scalded-daughters-leg.html
I know the 'point' of the story is to bash social services and show us all what a lousy job they are doing Hmm but it is hardly mentioned about the nappy causing so much damage. Shouldn't this be a product recall story also? Is anything being done about these nappies (not that I can see from a quick google)
I'm horrified!

Thats pretty scary Shock

Safs123 · 17/07/2012 20:23

I'm horrified too, especially as they don't name the supermarket brand the mum was using.
I'm using Asdas own brand as I was so disappointed with huggies which leaked every time my ds did a little wee.

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 17/07/2012 20:38

If you google the story, there are other articles saying it was Asda own brand nappies.

But there was a similar problem with some of the Pampers ones last year wasn't there?

Glad we use washables tbh as that I don't trust that chemical gel stuff.

HappyScatty · 17/07/2012 20:51

That is awful and very scary.

When dd was very small I cut open a nappy because i was curious about what was inside, I don't know what I was expecting but I was pretty shocked when all the gel burst out on me and I didn't like the look of it at all. I bought reusables that night.

BeingFluffy · 17/07/2012 22:01

Dreadful. The burns looked awful and the child must have been in great pain. I cannot believe the risks are not more widely known. We used disposable nappies for a total of 6 years for our two kids and never had one burst luckily.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/07/2012 22:28

Terrifying. Sad I have to admit to have left a child in a disposable long enough that a few gel crystals escaped Blush - but they didn't cause irritation that I could see. I wonder if the little girl in this case was dangerously sensitive to the gel? DS1 just out of nappies at night now and DS2 mostly in washables - it's a good incentive to keep him in them!

darkfever · 17/07/2012 22:50

Scary.

DS's nappy (pampers) burst last week - we opened his sleeping bag in the morning and there were little crystals everywhere - but luckily he didn't get any skin irritation from that.

He did get a bath as soon as we'd wiped off as much of the crystals as we could, though.

ReallyTired · 18/07/2012 13:43

That is scary, but it does make you wonder how long the nappy was left on for. I find unbelievable that a nappy could cause such serious burn and I can understand why social services were shocked.

Many parents up and down the country use supermarket nappies. I am surprised that there have not been more cases of burns.

BeingFluffy · 18/07/2012 14:18

Apparently there have been some cases in the USA. I can see why the SS burns expert originally thought it was a scald though.

A second burns expert thought they were caused by prolonged contact with the chemical nappy filler on a flat surface and/or urine/faeces. I agree it seems odd that there are not more reported cases in the UK>

darkfever · 18/07/2012 14:23

Another article I read on this case said that the little girl had had a rash on her legs the day before, so maybe that made the effect of the chemical nappy filler on her skin a lot worse?

Ryoko · 18/07/2012 16:06

I use Asda own brand and I've had them rip, how long was the child left in it? I've had no skin issues on my boy.

but then I can't use plasters they melt my skin off and I have to get cream from the GP to make it go away otherwise the area just grows and grows eating away at itself, I'm all so highly allergic to weed that stuff could kill me.

Everyones different.
