healthy food it aint rocket science is it?

why do they have to buy branded type of yogutry things or weiry "Healthier than ever " bread"

ok we may not eat helthily all the time but we dont need to buy food that makes us healthy do we?

exactly, curly. i mean, seriously, there are worse things you can do. not giving them sweets doesn't guarantee they won't get a sweet tooth later on in life. i had loads of sugar as a kid and now i could take it or leave it.

I'm not saying they are a terrible food. Just that they are on the same playing field as carrots, broccili, sprouts, etc. If I serve potaatoes, there will be (another) veg on the plate. And there probably won't be another rice/pasta/bread.

I think moderation is the key. I think modern society has too many choices and recieves too much conflicting advise about food. It annoys me when food for children is marketed as being healthy when it isn't though.

Yep, agree re everything in moderation - well, everything except transfats and artificial sweeteners.

It's just that I know people who give 4 and 5mo babies petit filous as entire meals, and I object to the "suitable from 4m" label on them - er, no, they contain cows milk and sugar, so no they're bloody not suitable.

Oh ok. Someone, I think Bush, declared tomato sauce a veg so they could count it as healthy eating in schools Shock.

Fruits contain seeds and are part of the reproductive cycle of the plant. So potatos wouldn't be fruits.

Think sweetcorn and beetroot are also technically counted as starches in the same way.

Anyway, the 5 a day thing is arbitrary as far as I know. I read it should rally be 8 or 9 portions a day. Shock.

It does annoy me though when I deliberately avoid sweets because I don't want her to have a sweet tooth like me. I give her raisins instead of giving her sweets. I buy fromage frais because the health visitor advised it as a way of giving her calcium, now I discover they are really bad for her. I thought the fruit puree at the bottom sweetened it, how naive am I? I generally consider myself to be someone who is quite aware of nutritional issues and avoid processed foods etc.

The problem with much of theese things is in the advertising tho. Took dss to the supermarket the other week and OMG I was shocked by the amount of advertising he took in as truth esp with regards to yogurts, actimel type drinks and brekkie cereals. Hung my head I shame I did. Thought I'd brought him up to be MUCH more cynical than that Grin. I'm working on it tho.

The real prob I have w/Petit Filous is they're not good value for money. So what I usually do is buy a big pot of Yeo Valley natural and mix some all-fruit jam I buy at the farmer's market into it.

Totally agree with Hunker on petit Filous (and all other fromage frais). It's fine as a desert. But, it is just that: desert.

And why oh why do health visitors recommend them. I swear people on mumsnet have the dumbest health visitors. If an HV said that to me, I'd stop listening to her... (of course I'd have to start listening to them before I could stop)

Grin there is that too EIS. I buy the big pots too cos I can use them for chillies and other thngs too. I either add jam or plain fruit for desert depending on how nice I'm being Grin. Prob as much sugar in the jam mind but at least I know what else has gone into the jam cos I made it. (boast boast)

The 'healthy' advert on tv that is currently causing me to spit nails is the one for that horrible sweet - the ones that are supposed to taste creamy? Pink and white stripes?
The whole advert is extolling how good for teeth they are....yes, but full of really terrible chemicals, and still, because of the taste, giving children the habit of eating sweets.

Actually I'm thinking of complaining to C4 Ch5 and the ATA about it.

you can get a majorly huge vat of it in Costco, which i do when we're out there, b/c dd1 is a yoghurt muncher extraordinnaire.

We give her Petits Filoux (get my French plural!) and I really do not know why. Except, as someone said, the adverts.
From now on NO MORE Petits Floux.
We will spoon some Yeo Valley into a pot and add a spoonful of delicious home made fruit puree.
And feel smug. Oh so smug. :)

Oh I agree. Blu, I've shouted at that ad too. I don't know the answer cod but I suspect:

Proper cooking and nutrition isn't taught in school
Schools have vending machines selling crap
School dinners are crap
People think half an hour is too long to spend cooking ffs. It's NORMAL imo! We have become a society ridiculously obsessed with wanting it NOW and think 1 minute in a microwave is the amount of time it's supposed to take to get food on the table
The food industry wants us to buy things with added ingredients because there's more profit in ready meals than vegetables and so we are bombarded with advertising and marketing telling us to buy this sort of stuff
Supermarkets are cunning and merchandise to make us buy as much as pos, including things we didn't think we'd needed
People who don't know how to cook don't know where to start.

It's pants isn't it?

and tomato sauce isn't that bad imo. OK, it's got sugar in it but I don't tihnk the odd amount of sugar is the end of the world, plus tomatoes, especially the cooked ones in ketchup are rich in lycopene.
