205000 more private sector jobs, 39000 fewer public sector jobs.

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/lms/labour-market-statistics/june-2012/index.html

Though the figures are in the right direction, I do think there is definitely scope for further, faster public sector cutting. The resulting lower taxes could give even more impetus to private sector employment growth.

yay!! great news

that means the letter i've just received from the County Council telling me there is NO support available for DDs SEN can just be photocopied and resent come September.

fuck the families who need support, we're saving money Hmm

CelineMcBean · 20/06/2012 10:19

Let's be accurate here. There is a reduction in the reported number of unemployed.

There are plenty of people doing low waged part time jobs, freelancing and getting by on the skin of their teeth who are desperately job hunting - but those people are not counted anywhere because they're not signing on each week.

Not much point paying less tax if it's fewer people paying and nobody has any money to spend with private sector. What a ridiculous op.

longfingernails · 20/06/2012 10:28

On the contrary CelineMcBean - they are counted (at least partially). That is part of the reason there is a discrepancy between the decrease in unemployment, and the increase in employment.

And anyway, what exactly is "ridiculous" in thinking that Osborne should be far, far bolder in reshaping our economy?

Load of bollocks. Those on shitty Workfare are counted as being employed. Those whose hours have been drastically cut (and are living hand to mouth as a result) are counted as being employed. Those on job shares are counted as both being employed. Those who do voluntary work are counted as being employed and those who only do a couple of hours a week are counted as being employed.

The statistics used to only count those in full time employment of more than 30 hours a week. Now they count every bugger.

It may look good, but it is not, in any way, a realistic and honest snapshot of the current unemployment issues.

CelineMcBean · 20/06/2012 10:45

Of course they're not counted. Unless they are claiming JSA they're not counted.

longfingernails · 20/06/2012 10:50

CelineMcBean The ONS releases both an unemployment figure and a claimant count figure.

Well why not ask just on here to see who is looking for work and have they been counted anywhere?

How do you think the ons know that Mrs Jones, a SAHM for 6 years is looking to go back to work? Or that Mr Brown who was made redundant and took a temporary job cabbing to make ends meet is looking for a project manager job at his previous level or just below? They don't.

longfingernails · 20/06/2012 10:57

Mr Brown is refusing to take responsibility for the catastrophic legacy he has inflicted on the British people. He is usually too ashamed to even turn up to do his job.

Oh if this is some ill informed political rant I'm not interested and I'm off.

CelineMcBean · 20/06/2012 11:00

Sorry that shouldn't say "if this is". It should say "as this is".

CogitoErgoSometimes · 20/06/2012 12:19

We're not out of the woods but the numbers have been going the right way for a few months now. I'm happy that the ONS is independent, professional and using the same measurement methods each month. "Unemployment measures people without a job who have been actively seeking work and are available to start work if a job is offered." The number of economically inactive people was also down which I think is encouraging.

twofingerstoGideon · 20/06/2012 12:25

You only need to look at the thread title to know who the OP is and that a biased point of view, which takes no account of anyone less fortunate than herself, is about to be presented.

noddyholder · 20/06/2012 12:26

LtEve has said it all.

carernotasaint · 20/06/2012 15:27

I agree with LtEve too. Shes said exactly the same as i was going too. Those on workfare are counted as being in work. But when it comes to them having the same rights as a paid worker then they are classed as being unemployed. The system (DWP.Workfare providers, work placements ) chop and change the rules all the time to suit their own agenda.

noddyholder · 20/06/2012 15:38

They are counted

lilyliz · 20/06/2012 17:16

I will not be counted nor my two friends.I managed to get 16 hours and manage just to live on that ,one friend gets by but only just on her pension from her last job and the other has a hubby on a low wage.We are all 57yrs old and nobody wants us,sodding retirement age change has done for us.Employers look at us and think oh near sixty but none of us will get a pension till 66.Our plan is to hobble into job centre at 60 with walking sticks and zimmers and say gies a job.

FoofFighter · 20/06/2012 17:19

Nobody has "counted" me.

I am unemployed but not claiming JSA/benefit.

FoofFighter · 20/06/2012 17:23

But the claimant count - the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance - increased by 8,100 in May compared with April, to 1.60 million.
