That poor poor family.

ripsishere · 12/06/2012 09:36

Dreadful that it has taken so long to prove the Mother innocent.

nymets · 12/06/2012 09:37

blimey i thought it was official years ago tbh

Dillydollydaydream · 12/06/2012 09:40

Such a shame the mother served 6 years in prison, losing her baby would have been bad enough. Very sad.

bamboobutton · 12/06/2012 09:44

i can't read the story as i've blocked the DM but if she served time in prison i hope she is going to sue for a shit load of money.

BonnieBumble · 12/06/2012 09:47

I never really understood why people didn't believe them.

We camped in Australia and ended up sleeping in the car because the dingos were circling our tent and snarling at us.

Domestic dogs have killed children so why did people find it so hard to believe that a wild dog had done the same?

Thumbwitch · 12/06/2012 09:48

So glad for the family that they have finally got the right answer. Poor Chamberlain family.

RabidAnchovy · 12/06/2012 10:00

Hope this family will now find some peace.

Nancy66 · 12/06/2012 10:40

I guess when a child disappears under mysterious circumstances people will ALWAYS suspect the parents - as we see with the McCanns - but in this case to be convicted on such piss-poor forensic evidence is shocking.

It wasn't just six years she served - it was six years with 'hard labour' something they still handed out when she was convicted

saffronwblue · 12/06/2012 10:45

It was a terrible miscarriage of justice. There was a lot of prejudice against the family because they did not react in the way the media wanted/expected. (Sound familiar?) Lindy Chamberlain served 3 years. She gave birth to her fourth child while in prison.
It just meant so much to those poor parents today to have the daughter's death certificate issued with the dingo as a cause of death. Very moving news footage and the coroner's voice wobbled as she formally gave her condolences on the loss of their daughter.

shrimponastick · 12/06/2012 10:52

Gosh - and this was such a long time ago. I hadn't realised it was still unproven.

Poor family to have had to wait so long to prove their innocence.

saffronwblue · 12/06/2012 10:57

The couple have been long exonerated but the cause of death has remained open.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 12/06/2012 15:56

"why did people find it so hard to believe that a wild dog had done the same?"

Don't you remember those poor little twins attacked by an urban fox in 2010? Despite this very clear eye-witness account, animal rights nutters were so incensed that anyone should accuse a fox that the family ended up needing police protection.

thestringcheesemassacre · 12/06/2012 15:58

I remember this story so well, it was MASSIVE at the time. (I'm Australian)

I'm so glad they have their innocence proven. It must have been beyond awful.

Does anyone else remember the blood in the car bit? Was that just media bullshit? The media were so vicious.

BeingFluffy · 12/06/2012 18:18

I read a book about the case years ago - struggling to remember the name. Wasn't there a film where Meryl Streep played Lindy Chamberlain?

Even the trial judge said he didn't sum up in favour of a conviction.

I think there were blood stains in the car because the family had picked up an injured RTA victim and taken him to hospital - the prosecution said Lindy had cut her daughter's throat in the car.

There was massive prejudice against the family because they belonged to an unusual religious group and people thought them a bit weird.

HerBigChance · 12/06/2012 18:22

The film, A Cry in the Dark, is excellent.

And yes, there was a lot of focus on the fact that Lindy Chamberlain wasn't emotional at quite the times the media demanded. The religious angle certainly didn't help them. It's good they've got justice today; the last verdict left too much room for doubt.

Nancy66 · 12/06/2012 18:42

The spray of blood in the car came from evidence the discredited forensic expert gave - nothing to do with the media

thestringcheesemassacre · 12/06/2012 19:17

Oh thanks for clearing that up.

redpanda13 · 12/06/2012 21:35

The alleged blood in the car was found to be copper oxide which was prevalent in the area the Chamberlain family lived in. The forensic expert never tested it just assumed it was blood.
