Dear all

I'm a longtime lurker and very occasional poster. I hope it's OK for me to post up these details - I'm a friend of the mum organising this protest. Of course, if it's not OK then please let me know and I will get the post reported and deleted. I have also posted these details on the main Syria thread. If you can come, that would be wonderful. If not, then if you could share these details, we would really appreciate it. Thanks for reading.

Stop Killing Children!

300 children and parents to protest at Syrian embassy as mum-of-two organises demonstration against the killing in Syria

On Sunday 10 June, from noon to 2pm, a protest against the massacre of 49 children and babies in Houla, Syria, as well as those killed before and since, will take place outside the Syrian Embassy, 8 Belgrave Square, London, SW1X 8PH.

Louise Tickle, journalist and mum-of-two, has organised the Stop Killing Children protest and is urging families and children to join her, her partner and two young sons (aged four and 18 months) in demanding that the Syrian regime and anyone else killing children in this conflict must stop.

She says, ?We have arranged this protest as a family because we are so appalled at the summary execution of 49 completely innocent children in Houla, as well as the killing of many thousands more over the past year.

?This is about preventing the murder of children and we want to make it a mark of the protest that our children, who live in a country where they can speak out without risking their lives, are visibly present.

?I?ve seen footage of toddlers - some of them barely nursery age children - who had their hands bound before they were slaughtered and it's not something we can ignore. We hope that other families feel the same and will join us outside the Syrian Embassy with their children. We have no other agenda than to urge that the organised killing of children must stop.

?I want the government here and in Syria to understand that people care enough to protest. I want parents of those children who were killed last weekend - and over the past year - to know that we care enough about their dead and injured children to shout our anger and disgust. I want all the Syrian children who are still alive today to stay alive. And I want as many people as possible to join me, Jim, Sam and Mungo at noon, this coming Sunday 10 June, to support our plea to Stop Killing Children.?

Over 300 people have already committed to join the protest, many with their children aged from a baby of five months to teenage boys and girls.

In keeping with the child-focused protest, the event will be followed with an informal picnic in Hyde Park. Supporters can follow the protest on the Twitter hashtag #stopkillingSyrianchildren

Anything in Glasgow or Edinburgh?

edam · 08/06/2012 22:22

I think this is a great idea.

LucyBTA · 09/06/2012 08:13

Just in London at the moment, SuperLemonCrush as that is where the Syrian embassy is - however if anyone wants to organise any parallel protests anywhere else then do let people know on the hashtag.

Thanks very much for your support, edam.

Sorry, I am in Glasgow so I can't be there, but I wish you all the best and I'll be there in spirit. Well done to whoever organised it.

ripsishere · 10/06/2012 09:44

I'm another one there in spirit. Well done for organising it.

enimmead · 10/06/2012 19:58

I really wish the killing would stop. I can't understand how anyone can kill a child.

I can't understand why no one is doing anything meaningful.

Wish I could have been there.

LucyBTA · 10/06/2012 20:19

Just to say that the protest went ahead today as planned and there was an extraordinary turnout - I'd say around 300-400 people. Fantastic for a protest organised by one woman, with no national media coverage, two weeks ago. It really shows the strength of feeling on this, I'd say.

There were lots of families with lots of children. It was all completely peaceful and very moving. A lady who was there has blogged about it here:
www.icarriedawatermelon.co.uk/blog/stop-killing-syrian-children-protest/

And there are more images on the #stopkillingSyrianchildren Twitter feed.

Thank you all for your messages of support. If anything else is planned I'll let you know.

It's weighing on my mind EVERY day Sad and I can't see me letting this rest until there is a resolution. I wish I could do more....

You feel so helpless don't you, those poor babes and their families.

This man has to be stopped.
