Bladder infection apparently:

He probably dehydrated himself so he could stand in the rain for 2 hours yesterday without needing a wee. I'd probably have done the same.

According to the Telegraph 'The Duke was taken to the hospital in Paddington following a call to ambulance control from Windsor at 2pm stating that the Duke was feeling unwell.

His doctor had been called to Windsor Castle and was with him when paramedics arrived and he was lifted into the ambulance in a chair before it set off for London.'

The hospital is a private one so it appears from reporting so far he used an NHS ambulance to go from Windsor to Paddington. I await the bunfight Wink

Are there many fully equipped, medically staffed and available emergency private ambulances (as opposed to those for patient transport) available to get to the palace on a bank holiday with roads closed?

I think it's a case of whatever is available and sort it out afterwards.

HMQueenElizabeth · 04/06/2012 18:40

Seriously! Angry

He's unwell, he's 91, an ambulance was called (probably by a Dr attending him at Windsor castle). The ambulance will provide him with care until he reaches hospital.

Who the hell are you to decide who is deserving of an ambulance or not! Angry

Meglet · 04/06/2012 18:42

My Great Great Auntie is 94 and has been hospitalised with bladder in fections twice in the last 18 months. Each time she's been in for a week or two while they clear it up, anti-B's IIRC. She takes a few weeks to get back to normal.

Doobydoo · 04/06/2012 18:42

Well it is a shame they (reluctant tax payers) probably don't feel the same compassion for others of their age.
Also a life of wealth, good food etc makes a difference I expect.Anyway tbh I could not care less.Am quite nauseated as have just noticed Mumsnets new name.People are quite frankly weird(poss me included but not because of monarchy) (smile)

HMQueenElizabeth · 04/06/2012 18:43

And he probably will go into a private ward of an NHS hospital. Before you start demanding your taxes and NI and whatever else only be used for the treatment of people you deem worthy.

Doobydoo · 04/06/2012 18:44

That's ok.They can pull a nurse off an NHS ward like they did where I used to work

HMQueenElizabeth · 04/06/2012 18:47

Oh FFS.

"Who the hell are you to decide who is deserving of an ambulance or not! "

no-one here is claiming to decide who is or isn't deserving of one.

i am merely pointing out that when other people are being turned down and told to go to hospital by themselves, despite having NO way of getting there, it's pretty fucking annoying to see someone who can get there being sent one immediately.
just because they're rich/famous/royal.

monkeymoma · 04/06/2012 18:48

bladder infections cause all kinds of delerium and all sorts in the elderly, I can see why it could be an ambulance job, and depending on how high it drove his temp it could have been very serious

in a serious emergency private patients tend to blue light to the nearest hospital with an available ITU bed, ITU beds are nationalised

thisisyesterday · 04/06/2012 18:49

if someone is likely to die of a bladder infection within 10-15 minutes, and an NHS ambulance was the quickest possible way of getting him treatment then I will retract what I have said.

crazynanna · 04/06/2012 18:49

I did an agency stint in that hospital. 'Tis a beautiful place...actually feels like a palace inside.

Olympia2012 · 04/06/2012 18:49

Hope he gets the medical care he needs

monkeymoma · 04/06/2012 18:50

"normal" elderly people who suddenly don't know who how or where they are and are falling all over themselves due to underlying UTIs also get ambulances to hospital, I've worked in A&E and never known anyone in that state to get themselves there!

Kellamity · 04/06/2012 18:51

Poor Prince Philip, I hope he gets better soon. Bladder infections in the elderly can be quite nasty. Having said that my 18 month old niece was hospitalised with a UTI at the beginning of last week, she was very unwell all of a sudden, better now thank goodness.

thisisyesterday · 04/06/2012 18:52

maybe someone who works for the ambulance service can clarify, but i thought they are supposed to take you to the nearest hospital?

it must surely have been a private ambulance?

monkeymoma · 04/06/2012 18:54

Royals absolutely do get admitted to nearest NHS hospitals in emergencies, I've worked where one was

Shesparkles · 04/06/2012 18:54

Or maybe he didn't fancy tonight's concert Wink
I hope he's ok, whatever anyone thinks about the monarchy, he's a much loved husband

HMQueenElizabeth · 04/06/2012 18:55

And what about drunken idiots who've been in fights, perhaps they're the ones you should be bashing and not a sick 91 year old man.

If an attending Dr calls ambulance control and states a patient needs an ambulance, then the patient gets an ambulance. If you call ambulance control sometimes they have to deduce whether it is necessary to send one. They have to prioritise. I'm not saying it was right in the case you describe, I don't know the details, I wasn't there. But it's just the way it is.

Why are people being so inconsiderate. Sad

Meglet · 04/06/2012 18:56

My Auntie was taken to hospital by ambulance with her bladder infections, although this is possibly because a doctor was called out during the night each time.

OddBoots · 04/06/2012 18:56

I know when I had complications from a surgery after I'd gone home the ambulance phoned the hospital I'd had the surgery in to find out if they wanted me back there or to my nearest so it doesn't have to be the nearest, it's the most suitable.

thisisyesterday · 04/06/2012 18:57

no-one is bashing a 91 year old man.

i just think rules are rules. and if they're being broken for royalty that isn't fair

is paddington the nearest hospital to windsor?

HMQueenElizabeth · 04/06/2012 18:59

And the rule is if an attending Dr says to ambulance control that a patient needs an ambulance the patient GETS an ambulance!

monkeymoma · 04/06/2012 19:00

at one point when I worked in London, the nearest hopsital for ambulances with serious cases was on the Isle of weight because all others nearer had no ITU beds or capacity to transfer or downgrade any ITU patients,
so its not necessarily nearset geographically, but nearest one with available services
