So, a liberal democrat candidate for Basingstoke thinks a five year sentence for rape is "excessive"

I'm slightly surprised that the rapist vote has become so big and valuable that it is being courted in Basingstoke, but I know very little of that part of the world and given the current travails of the Lib Dems, I suppose there may be some sort of electoral advantage in tweeting that our justice system is outrageous for actually punishing a rapist properly. Maybe no on else will vote for them anymore, what do I know.

The Lib Dem candidate in question, seems to imagine that if a man is good looking and lots of women "wouldn't say no" to him, then the fact that one woman didn't say yes, means his sentence for rape ought to be lowered. Apart from the fact that this is unfair to ugly rapists, it shows a confusion in his mind about the difference between sex and rape, which means that this young man is not fit to represent women. I'll say nothing about what else he might not be fit to do with women as that doesn't actually have anything to do with his electoral campaign.

I've e-mailed Basingstoke Lib Dems to tell them what I think of their candidate's views, if you want to to, here's the link to their website:

The story ran in last Thursday's Basingstoke Gazette (local rag) so most of us know about this vile man already.

He is a twat to believe he could make those comments and get away with it.

Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 01/05/2012 18:55

He's even more of a twat with the fauxpology:

?If I have offended anyone, I apologise. I think we are all entitled to our own opinions.?

If he has offended anyone? Maybe a good looking chap who most of us wouldn't say no to should see how he feels about being the one who says no.

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 19:18

That apology is utterly shit

ElectricSoftParade · 01/05/2012 19:44

It's not even a real apology. Just trying to appease the people who are angered by it. Fucking idiot.

FUCKING IDIOT.

BasilFoulEggs · 01/05/2012 19:47

Whose apology was that? The man from Brighton or the man from Basingstoke?

OP posts:
Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 01/05/2012 19:48

The "man" from Basingstoke.

But it isn't an apology. It's fucking apologising on the behalf of the offended people. Arse.

So he's stated that he's entitled to his views?

And his views are that a 5 year rape sentence for rape, is too long?

That's actually very frightening.

I'd like to see if he thought it were too long, if he were raped and his rapist were caught.

But of course, I'm making the mistake that Ched Evans' victim is just as human as a lib dem with a dick. Silly me, I should remember that women's lives are less important than men's.

Why do so many male politicians make twatty remarks like this about rape? How come female politicians don't?

AM Wink

Well, lets face it, the Lib Dems are very sympathetic to rapists aren't they? The first thing they wanted to do when they got to power, was introduce anonymity for men accused of rape, IE enable even more rapists to get away with it, as if enough of them don't.

They won't be happy until the conviction rate is down from its far too high level of 6%. And now some of them apparantly think 5 years for an act of violence which can cause years of psychological damage, is too high.

They are the rapist's friend. Just as well, 'cos no other fucker likes them any more.

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 20:09

Yes

LIAM ELVISH has stated that he is entitled to his opinions

ie that 5 years is too long for rape and that as he believes that lots of women would be happy to have sex with Ched Evans it somehow lessens the crime if he rapes someone

And if anyone is offended by these opinions then he is "sorry".

I am presumably entitled to my opinion that he is a rape apologist arsehole whose political career is now hopefully ruined. I doubt anyone finds that offensive.

DharmaLovesDraco · 01/05/2012 20:09

If ever I needed another reason to hate the Lib Dems - fucker.

Have emailed.

wizzler · 01/05/2012 20:16

I have emailed Nick Clegg. . hoping that my twopenneth may push them in the right direction. ( Doubt it but you never know)

ReactionaryFish · 01/05/2012 20:16

He is certainly entitled to his views. So are we. So are the good people of Basingstoke, 50% of whom (roughly) happen to be female. No doubt this disgusts Mr Elvish, but those 50% have a vote.
The little gobshite might care to reflect on this as he sees his prospects of a political career go up in smoke on Thursday, tee hee.

Alcina · 01/05/2012 20:17

SardineQueen
Nope, not offensive at all!

MamaMary · 01/05/2012 20:20

I blame pornography and its objectification of females for these attitudes. Music lyrics and videos reinforce the de-valuation of women.

Women don't tend think like this because they don't tend to consume porn.

intravenouscoffee · 01/05/2012 20:22

Have emailed. Thanks for the link Basil and for both threads. MN at its best.

tara0202 · 01/05/2012 20:25

I absolutely despair. I am going to e mail LD HQ now too.

MyDogShitsShoes · 01/05/2012 20:26

Back on my phone today, no bloody laptop so can't get to work on this one til tomorrow Angry

This is not good, the more I stew the more bloody pissed i'm getting Angry Angry

Hopefully the steam will have cleared so I can compose something eloquent to send to them all tomorrow Angry Angry Angry

Jux · 01/05/2012 20:34

I've emailed to all those people. what next?

lostmywellies · 01/05/2012 20:38

Don't quite understand the other idiotic rape tweet, though, SQ. He's trivialising rape because he mentioned it alongside murder? He's trivialising serious crime, surely - but it's being dismissed as trivialising rape so that it seems like reactionary feminist whiners... don't you think?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/05/2012 20:43

It seems Liam Elvish thinks raping a woman who is incapable of giving consent deserves a lesser sentence because it doesn't involve force. Good Lord.

I have emailed the Lib Dems, suggesting they might like to make it clear that Mr Elvish's opinion on a proportionate sentence for rape does not represent the opinion of their party.

kohl · 01/05/2012 20:44

Have emailed the leader and deputy leader of lib dems on basingstoke county council, plus lib dem hq and lib dem basingstoke. How about emailing Lynne Featherstone who is the equality minister?

The sad thing is I'm not deep down surprised by Liam Elvish's comments - it's what loads of people think.
However, I AM fucking furious and sickened by the fact that not one bloody Lib dem person has distanced themselves.
Shame on them.

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 20:49

lostmywellies it came up when I googled lib dem rape and thought people might be interested.

I have not subjected it to close analysis!

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 20:50

On BBc now:

"Vote 2012: Nick Clegg says voters listening to Lib Dems again

Voters are listening to what the Lib Dems have to say again after last year's English election disappointment, party leader Nick Clegg has said."

Yes we are nick, and we are not very impressed.

lostmywellies · 01/05/2012 21:00

Yeah, I was definitely interested. Just thought it was bizarre how it was being reported.
