Adamschic My parents were on low income, but not low enough that I got any help through maintenance grants, they didn't have enough to support the gap, so as an adult (18 yo) I supported myself. The bursary I got was subject specific, my university didn't provide means tested bursaries and to my knowledge still don't.
I'm just speaking from experience that it's not impossible to work or even to have to give up work around exam time/final year, and that to me it's a warped view to think that a course would demand a job to finish - it's solely dependent on the individual and how much they are willing to put in..
Sorry if it came across that I'm begrudging the bursary - I'm not. Percentage wise what I got was greater in relation to my fees, so I've no grudge there at all :)
I personally think it's great that anyone chooses to further their knowledge in a specific field and go to university, so good luck to your DC!!
