Anyone listening?

No but is that something to do with gas and earthquakes?

RIZZ0 · 17/04/2012 12:31

Yes, hydraulic fracturing or fracking, for shale gas.

It can cause earthquakes and contaminate water and land.

Just seen it in sky news, it really doesn't sound good.

They showed a clip from the US, it was a man who held a lighter next to a water tap, next thing the sink went up in flames Shock

This is one of the biggest issues in the UK at the moment, yet most people haven't got a clue about it. Very murky.

I tried to find out about this a few years ago, not listening to Mr Vine today but might listen again later. Interesting and to me, a very worrying topic.

You'd do well to check out Facebook groups like No Fracking UK I found them really useful resources, most newspaper reports are ill-informed or focussing on the wring issues.

I live in Sussex where they are considering using Fracking. Off to google for more info.

Then you're lucky (in a way!) that you have a very active resistance to fracking in your area. Some places the local people just don't have a clue.

Check out their FB page www.facebook.com/NOFrackinginSussex and also gasdrillinginbalcombe.wordpress.com I've found invaluable info on the later particularly.

p.s. the Jeremy Vine show was about a much use as a chocolate teapot. Such a vague approach.

Also don't they need to use gallons, and I mean between 1.5 - 2.5 million gallons of water right in the middle of a water drought?

So what happen if the water is cotaminated?

HalfPastWine · 18/04/2012 22:57

The whole process sounds very dodgy but if there's money in it then they'll do it. Greedy bastards.

RIZZ0 · 20/04/2012 13:06

About 5 million gallons of fresh water per well. In Lancashire the wells could run in to the hundreds. We are in the middle of a drought so why not bloody dessicate us?!!

They can only recover a max of 25% of the contaminated water, so the rest just sits there or seeps in to the land, the water table etc. It's ridiculous.

But, government terms are relatively short and they all want to make their mark IMO. They're refusing to acknowledge the long term health factors and environmental consequences. Sad
