JFT96 Expose the lies before Thatcher dies.
RIP to all those who went to a football match on 15th April 1989 and never came home. And sympathy and condolences to all their families and friends.

Gigondas · 15/04/2012 18:14

Why people are focused on titanic and not this is just wrong . My thoughts are with family and friends of those who were killed that day

BoneyBackJefferson · 15/04/2012 18:23

Gigondas

If they ever make a film of the hillsborough disaster I am sure that they will.

He was younger than I am now :(

RIP and sorry for being a day late - I did actually read this yesterday but was distracted by the other thread before I had a chance to reply.

Boney, Gigondas - credit where it's due there was a (supposedly - I haven't seen it) very good docudrama on the subject by Jimmy McGovern which did do a lot to show people the truth about what happened. I agree that it's terrible that people are obsessing over the Titanic disaster - tragic as that also was - while outside of Liverpool the ongoing fight for justice seems to have been mostly forgotten or even ridiculed. Speaking as a non-scouser though I don't think the 96 and their loved ones could ask for a more tenacious city to fight their corner and for that reason alone I have no doubt that justice will eventually be done.

YNWA - and don't buy the Sun.

Birdsgottafly · 18/04/2012 11:40

I was thinking about this on Sunday, as i do every year and every time i hear Titanic mentioned, because they share the same anniversary.

I don't think that the drama made will ever be beaten, because it happened in the actors lifetime, as in some were actually watching the tradegy unfold (as i was) and read the subsequent lies in the media, especialy 'The Scum', as it is locally known.

I think that it came across in the acting (even though there were some fine actors in it), the actors had their own personal point to make and worked closely with the families that they were portraying.

Many people's lives were affected by this, as many of those that were there, suffered lasting effects, fear of crowds, anxiety etc, less was known then about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is what many suffered from and still do.

vj32 · 19/04/2012 08:52

Its 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic, I haven't heard it mentioned any other year in the press, so I don't think it is overshadowing Hillsborough.

It was not really in my lifetime - in that I was too young to remember - but I am aware of it. But I thought there had been an inquiry and there were too many people let in the ground, poor stadium design and then police made mistakes and lost control. Why are people still campaigning for 'the truth'. What more do they want to know? I know there are some unreleased files, but its not unusual for government files to not be made public for 50 or 75 years after the event they discuss. There is lots of TV and media coverage. I think in some ways all the coverage is counter productive as some of it just makes these campaigners out to be conspiracy nuts when they are probably just still grieving.

There had been crushes at Hillsborough in previous years apparently. Why did parents take their children to these matches when the stadiums were so unsafe?

I just think, sad as this is, there can't be a bit national event on the anniversary of every tragedy every year. Apart from anything else there are so many tragedies causing big loss of life. All the football matches held a minutes silence. It isn't forgotten.

SpagboLagain · 19/04/2012 09:00

vj32 Biscuit

I don't buy the Sun, never would. But I would rather hold the individuals there at the time accountable. Ie boycott anything involving Kelvin Mackenzie.

Sorry, this probably should have gone on the other thread which I hadn't seen.

FoofFighterYNWAJFT96 · 19/04/2012 09:02

Yes I think it should have.

OP posts:
AlanMoore · 19/04/2012 09:14

I haven't seen the other thread either but in response to
vj32 - the truth is still being sought as there was a cover-up on an enormous scale. Police officers were pressured to change statements, blatant lies told to the press and MPs, google Kevin Williams - the coroner declared everyone was dead/beyond resuscitation by 3.15 but a police officer who was looking after Kevin stated he spoke briefly and died in her arms almost an hour later.

The full truth wouldn't bring back those 96 people, or mend the ruined lives of those left behind, but it would satisfy the need to know exactly how and why people's loved ones died. The immediate aftermath was poorly managed too, only one ambulance made it on the pitch for example.

There is a wider issue of police corruption and contempt for public safety. I would like to say it couldn't happen now but I suspect there probably is potential for another Hillsborough, not in football but perhaps in transport. I am not a Liverpool fan, a Scouser or indeed a football fan, but I saw the coverage on Grandstand. I recommend Phil Scraton's book or "The Day Of The Hillsborough Disaster" which is based on the Taylor report if anyone is geniunely interested in understanding why this is still so important after 23 years.

Birdsgottafly · 19/04/2012 10:24

There were problems with the trains to start with and because the match was being televised, the police were happy to overlook public safety and disregard their duties.

This tragedy and the cover up, is bigger than that, of the killers of Stephen Lawrence not being convicted for 19 years, because of all of the agencies involved in it.

Why did parents take their children to these matches when the stadiums were so unsafe

There had ben concerns about how all football fans were being treated, but these were supposed to be being addressed and there was no reason to think that this would happen, because it was the duty of the police to ensure that it didn't.

This was bigger than human error.

There are stil apologies outstanding and facts that should be shared.

There are concerns being voiced still over the timing of matches and how the trains are managed.

vj32 · 19/04/2012 11:54

Thanks for answering my questions. I will look up that book to find out more.

Lulumama · 19/04/2012 11:59

I really really hope that one day and soon, the truth will be revealed, the cover up was and probably is still huge , coming from a top level downward.

it is extremely harrowing to read about what happened, and I remember the day quite clearly

the 96 and their families deserve justice and truth
