What are you doing to combat global warming?

Just been listening to a discussion on R4 about this. I recycle tins, bottles, plastic bottles and compost green waste. Also try to turn things off and keep thermostat at 18 degrees (not so easy). I feel I should be doing loads more and wonder what everyone else is doing?

I recycle my rubbish.

And erm, turn the tap off when brushing teeth?

Rhubarb · 08/02/2006 13:37

I'm trying to cut down on farting. So is dh.

Issymum · 08/02/2006 13:38

Good question kittyfish.

I fly or I'm supposed to fly quite a lot trans-Atlantically for business. My gut-feel is that all my other environmental activities - recycling, switching off lights and heating, using public transport etc. - are wiped out by a few trans-Atlantic flights, but I've never found the data on the Net to back that up. Anybody else know?

Papillon · 08/02/2006 13:39

I vote for the green party

brimfull · 08/02/2006 13:40

we have had cavity wall insulation and now have the heating at a constant 14-16

recycle most things we can,but don't have a compost bin...couldn't get on with that

turn off the tv,dvd, video from the plug

try and but locally produced food

walk instead of drive if I can be bothered, not too good at this one

nailpolish · 08/02/2006 13:41

sold my car
recycle
keep house at 1 degree less than i used to
turn off lights when not in the room
dont boil entire kettles of water
have a compost heap
dont use chemicals in the garden
cut down on chemical cleaning products

Frenchgirl · 08/02/2006 13:43

Rhubarb
great minds think alike
was about to post 'am trying to get dh to stop farting'

(I don't of course!)

tortoiseshell · 08/02/2006 13:43

Recycle everything we can - tins, cans, glass, paper, plastic bottles to special recycling point. Compost all kitchen waste. When we bought our car we looked for one that was the most fuel efficient, and a diesel, and try not to use it if possible. Use a draught excluder. Try not to buy over packaged things. use washing machine etc at night (there is surplus energy then that is otherwise wasted).

tarantula · 08/02/2006 13:46

same as np cept we never had a car. I cycle almost everywhere. Use breadsoda and vinegar in the kitchen mainly.

moondog · 08/02/2006 13:46

Tell me more about your compost heap np.Have just acuired a bin.

Avoid supermarkets and buy as much as Ic\an locally
Recycle or give away as much as I possible can
Reusable nappies
Keep car usage to a minimum
Breast fed (very environmentally friendly)

LikeIssy though, know that the 30 ++ flights we take a year cancels out allthe above.

Rhubarb · 08/02/2006 13:48

Frenchgirl, that's 2 things we've found in common! What is the world coming to at all????

moondog · 08/02/2006 13:48

Said it before, but a good tactic with excess packaging is to take it off your stuff when you shop and say to the cashier politely but pointedly
'Do you have a bin for this?'

Saves lots of hassle when you get home too.

Forgot to say...always refuse plastic bags.

Frenchgirl · 08/02/2006 13:48

oh no, you'll be wanting to move to France next

Issymum - yep flying will by far cancel out all your other efforts. Doesn't mean you should not do the rest, but try and talk to your employer and see if there are otherways to do your job without flying so much (would give you more time at home as well - bonus !).
Do they do video conferencing ? Get them to investigate access grid - sort of video conferencing through computers - it can be done from your desktop - very useful if you contact the same people regularly.

On the green front we recycle, are building an extension which much improve the energy efficiency of our house (although all the concrete involved in building it probably negates what we save in the future ), use a wood burning stove to heat the house, no tumble drier. We are also considering switching leccy to the Scottish Power hydro supply - but want to investigate that a bit more.

DH also does his bit by being a climate scientist and helps to build the understanding of the climate system.

i dont put grass in it, but i put cuttings from dead flowers etc (in other words, dead garden rubbish) all veg and fruit waste, tea (not bags) and coffee, no bread or anything, and a ton of worms

we also have a resident toad, Terence (Terence Toad D'arby)

its not a very good compost heap really, i just make it up as i go along, could do with some tips myself

and its not a bin, dh just nailed together some bits of wood in a square shape about 2 feet high

motherinferior · 08/02/2006 13:51

I write self-righteous articles about green living and have been known to ponce around in newspapers claiming I want a flight-free holiday, does that count ?

DP doshes out money to climate changing organisations, too.

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 13:53

forgot - local food, grow our own veggies, compost, second hand most things, low energy lightbulbs. And next to no flying (haven't been on a plain for at least 10 years I think).

Skribble · 08/02/2006 13:55

I leave my fridge open for at least an hour every day to help combat all this global heating thing .

moondog · 08/02/2006 13:55

How long before it becomes what could be termed 'compost' then?
HF,never visited Germany properly but always impressed at Frankfurt and Munich airports with the divided recycling bins that they have had for years.

Can you recycle allplastic?
What stuff is on deposit?

Intersting article in The observer last week in which they'd asked various families to save their rubbish and then weighed it.
Was truly frightening.
Also had scientists analysing biodegradability of various forms of packaging.
Those soft pouch things that they do catfood (or is it diet food?? Same difference)in seemed to be the worst of all..

Rhubarb · 08/02/2006 13:56

moondog, quick question - on that thread, is PD actually serious or wot???????

nailpolish · 08/02/2006 13:58

dunno moondog, weve only lived in this house about 6 mths, so compost heap is only 6 mths old, and it just looks like an ENORMOUS cowpat at the moment!

moondog · 08/02/2006 14:00

Dunno...

You all lost me ages ago with what I assumed was Star Trek jargon!
