I didn't see this but my husband and son were watching the game. It looked shocking, the way the commentators and presenters were talking makes me think he may well be dead. Not something you expect to see on TV on a saturday evening is it.

I hope the player is alright, what an awful thing to happen.

gobbledegook1 · 17/03/2012 20:54

According to the hospital press release he is now in a stable condition.

southeastastra · 17/03/2012 20:55

yeah there is a whole other thread about it

Grag · 17/03/2012 20:59

Where is the other thread? I had a look for one before I started this one.

I have heard that he is in a stable condition. Thank God,

claig · 17/03/2012 21:36

Unfortunately, the latest news is that he is critically ill and in intensive care.

Bohica · 17/03/2012 21:38

I have a friend who was at the match, he said it was awfull watching them trying to revive him and the whold crowd was silent.

I do hope he pulls through, 23 is no age Sad

The other thread is in "chat" so is attracting lots of posts, all of which will of course vanish idc. I think this is the only thread in a permanent forum - so perhaps the betterr home for the important messages: such as how knowing even the basics of CPR can save a person's life.

The news this morning is that Muamba remains in a critical but stable condition.

Greythorne · 18/03/2012 07:28

Thank goodness he is now stable.

ripsishere · 18/03/2012 09:22

Horrible. I have absolutely no interest in football and saw this on the news last night.
Poor man, he has a one year old.
He is in a very good hospital. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.

wannaBe · 19/03/2012 09:46

I am amazed there is very little talk of this here.

I think the fact that there are conditions like this which mean a seemingly fit and healthy 23 year old can collapse without warning or prior incident and, were it not for the fact that there were medics to hand (essentially he was in the best place for this to have happened, iyswim) would now be dead, is absolutely terrifying.

And even having been resussitated, the news this morning is that his heart essentially took two hours to be restarted, and that he is still anesthetised, so I think it is not good news at all tbh.

very Sad for him and his family.

EdithWeston · 19/03/2012 10:49

Here's a link to the Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome organisation. It isn't much talked about - perhaps because it is indeed terrifying, but it does happen.

What we as individuals can do is learn First Aid, and perhaps press for schools to include First Aid as a routine part of PSHE courses (certainly at secondary age).

Iggly · 19/03/2012 10:54

I did first aid course at secondary school but what's the bet that austerity means it wouldn't happen now. Shame really.

ripsishere · 19/03/2012 17:35

I was glad to read he is responding a bit and moving his arms and legs.
I am concerned that he took two hours to start breathing on his own.
Wishing strength to his family. They will certainly need it in the weeks/months/years to come.

\link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/mar/21/fabrice-muamba-on-the-mend\sounding a lot better today}

Dr Andrew Deaner, the cardiologist and Tottenham fan who leapt from his seat in the crowd and rushed on to the pitch to help the player, said Muamba's recovery could be described as "miraculous". Dr Deaner went to visit the player after he had woken up and recalled that Muamba was able to make a joke even that early on into his recovery process.

"I whispered into his ear: 'What's your name?'" he said. The footballer gave his name. Dr Deaner went on: "I said: 'I understand you're a very good footballer.' And he said: 'I try.'"

Dr Deaner said he had had tears in his eyes at witnessing that sign of the player's sense of humour returning so soon
