who cares if he had gay relationships? if they were consensual, does it matter?
really annoying how media time is being used up like this.

Who's Hughes?

(excuse my ignorance )

Aloha · 26/01/2006 09:21

I suppose it was because he spent so long denying it ultra-vigorously, and because when he stood against Peter Tatchell his campaign literature was headed 'a straight choice' and because everyone in the media knew he was gay, hence all the questioning.
However, I find the feeding frenzy over everyone in politics' sexuality pretty depressing.

Clayhead · 26/01/2006 09:21

Simon Hughes, Lib Dem candidate.

stitch, I agree it seems an odd 'headline' story.

Beetroot · 26/01/2006 09:22

Lib dem guy running for leadership
Don't give a toss about his sex life

Aloha · 26/01/2006 09:22

Simon Hughes, potential Liberal Democrat leader (only probably not now)

pupuce · 26/01/2006 09:23

Simon Hughes. Lib dem contenter

I am sure there are plenty of gay or bi-sexual politicians.... unfortuantely I know some who have a significant negative views (still these days) against homosexuality - for religious reasons.... wonder if this would make them not vote for someone.

Coathanger · 26/01/2006 09:23

Ohhhh, yeah, got it now!! Was a little confused (with my flu addled brain!)

Beetroot · 26/01/2006 09:23

Aloha, I hadn't realsied he did that with Tatchell. Perhaps that is reasn enough for him not to standf.

Agree though the fren\zy that the gutter press get int about sexuality is repugnant.
Noty alwasy the gutter press either!

Aloha · 26/01/2006 09:25

He is Christian! Rather fervently so. Suspect this is the reason he is neither happily gay nor married.

Freckle · 26/01/2006 09:25

I don't think the vast majority of people give two stuffs about whether he is gay or not. It's his constant denying of it which will give pause for thought. Voters want honesty from their politicians (although they rarely get it).

stitch · 26/01/2006 09:26

ohh, coathange,r take care of yourself.
have lots of drugs, (paracetamol etc) and rest.

Coathanger · 26/01/2006 09:27

Thanks Stitch!

SorenLorensen · 26/01/2006 09:27

Blimey, do the LibDems have any potential leadership candidates without big old skeletons in the closet? What's next? Old Mingus in Likes to Wear a Nappy, Suck a Dummy and Be Shouted at by Woman in a Tabard Scandal?

I agree, it's utterly irrelevant - but the leadership contest is blimmin' boring, I guess the media are attempting to spice it up a bit.

lalaa · 26/01/2006 09:27

so bored about hearing about Lib Dem MPs' sex lives. I don't care. I'd rather not think about it.

kittyfish · 26/01/2006 09:28

It isn't his sexuality it is that he lied about it so blatently. I think that is reason enough not to stand. If he is going to lie about something as unimportant as whether he is gay or straight then he will lie about other more important stuff too.

I also agree that the media frenzy is sickening but we have helped to make it like this by buying the papers and magazines.

Bugsy2 · 26/01/2006 10:19

Someone, somewhere has it in for the LibDems and clearly has shed loads of dirt for the very pious Simon Hughes to be finally admitting that he is gay or had gay relationships.
I'm intrigued to know where it is all coming from. Could be either Labour or Tories, neither of them want the Lib Dems to become a viable third party.

kittyfish · 26/01/2006 10:21

Well Labour are reknowned for dishing the dirt on other parties which is how they got in against Majors Govt.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/01/2006 10:23

Erm, unless ive missed something, i always thought he was gay and that it was common knowledge?

Tbh, if there wasnt such a stigma still attached to sexual preference then i would agree that its not a good thing deny.

Put in context, i dont think its a big deal, and even more importantly - if he's not breaking the law then its no-ones business either.

oliveoil · 26/01/2006 10:26

But why quiz someone on whether they are gay or straight anyway? He wouldn't have had to deny it if he hadn't been pestered, imo it's as relevant as which supermarket he likes, ie irrelevant.

Can you imagine a headline in The Sun 'Hughes - I am a Tesco's man myself' (see pages 2,3 and 4),

mummytosteven · 26/01/2006 10:27

i'm not bothered what his preferences are, or even if he lied about them. slightly more concerned about the hyprocrisy re:tbe Peter Tatchell situation.

Caligula · 26/01/2006 10:29

I had no idea this was a secret. I've known for years he was gay. I thought everyone did. It's one of the reasons I dislike him so much, because of that disgusting campaign the tabloids conducted against Peter Tatchell in Bermondsey for being gay, when all the time Hughes himself was gay, and just didn't mention it till afterwards.

At least, I thought he'd mentioned it afterwards. Obviously not, then, if it's been secret up to now.

Marina · 26/01/2006 10:32

Snap caligula, I still despise him for what he did during that campaign too. It really gets in the way of my taking him seriously.

Filyjonk · 26/01/2006 10:33

I don't care if he is gay, bi or straight, the only thing that matters is his ability to run the country.

Which, to my mind, is tarnished by the whole Peter Tatchell smearing incident.

However, I do think he's the best of the lot. Which is a bit appalling really.

Marina · 26/01/2006 10:34

Do you know SorenLorenson I was just wondering when we would hear that Ming the Merciless was a laydee.
Last one out of the LibDem closet shut the door please...

Marina · 26/01/2006 10:37

Bugsy, my money is on the Tories on that front, just because this is all coming out now...and they've had a very considerable personnel turnover themselves lately.
Although Gordon Brown's camp could have set the dogs running in advance I suppose...
