What do you think of this? Is Hamas a political party or a terrorist organisation?

Democratically elected though
The US and Israel are in a brick wall and hard place.
The US and their urge for democracy everywhere.
You can lead a horse to water etc...
Also with Sharon out and the possibility of a new PM who would threaten the current stalemate of perceived progress (the Gaza withdrawal) they would feel insecure enough to vote in some muscle.
But thats just my opinion from watching endless More4 and Ch4.

The article also says the EU regards them as a terrorist organization. Will this victory further divide the west from the Middle East... I hope not. But, I must say it's not looking good with a ruling party who much of the developed world regard as a terrorist organization.

Hamas is a legitimate and duly elected political organisation. How can people possibly criticise them for arming themselves against the onslaught of the expansionist and racist Israeli so called government is beyond me.

Donnie, Hamas is openly dedicated to the destruction of Israel & all in it - is that what you want to see? What you call the Israeli 'so-called government' is also a 'legitimate and duly elected political organisation'. I'm afraid you're being as hypocritical and subjective as any refusing to recognise Hamas' new role. There are 2 sides to this story, as with any.

the problem is Hamas have done a lot for people at grass roots level and Fatah [sp?] did not. And the Israeli govt have forced the Palestinians into such an impossible situation you can't blame them for voting for people who they think care about them most. Of course terrorism is`wrong, and they will have to renounce violence to become a legitimate political force, but when you look at the terrorist type behaviour of the Israeli govt at times you wonder how on earth the Palestinians are supposed to respond.
