Teenager completes solo round the world sailing trip

I remember a thread about this last year just before she set off: dutch teenager Laura Dekker has now successfully sailed around the world on her own.

Not sure what to think tbh. It does seem like an unnecessary risk, both to herself and to other people if they'd had to go and rescue her. But I can't help but admire what she's done.

I feel the same way, but my additional thing is why? Why would you want to be all alone for a year?
I understand the record breaking but, there is no way on this earth that my DD would be doing that.

I was about to start a thread about it.

I think it's fucking brilliant and well done to her.

She's been sailing since a small child, so I don't think lack of experience was an issue. Wherewithal, the strength of character, maturity necessary to accomplish it at such young age...amazing.

And Kreecher- she was in constant contact with her friends and family by Skype etc. But she very well may be the kind of person who is happy alone, perhaps.

Amazing. We are judging her by today's standards of cosseting our children, and I must admit, some of them wouldn't be capable of anything remotely as impressive as this, but there you go.

Well done and I wish mine wanted to sail round the world!

Of course, it just isn't for me and nor will my DD be doing it. DH can piss off on his own as far as I am concerned though.
He wouldn't set any records or attract attention. 54 YO men don't.
