"Public Sector Workers Should Take A Pay Cut" Says....

.... Ed Milliband. Shock Not only does he fully support the payfreeze - much to the dismay of the unions that voted him in - he suggests the public sector should be prepared to take a paycut to save their own jobs. Article here Grin Do you think the Labour front-bench have him on Electoral Suicide Watch?

Brilliant isn't he? I used to loathe him, but I can't help liking him after this little bit of PR-disaster.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 18/01/2012 14:27

He's the red-rosetted answer to Gerald Ratner. Totally blows his credibility when commenting on the raised unemployment numbers today. 'It's all down to the cuts'... he bleats. Would they be the same cuts you've just said you'd be matching Ed? Hmm

I work in the Public Sector and havent had a pay rise in 3 years. Effectively a pay cut.
Not for much longer, though due to the rise in train and bus fares.
At the end of the month I have £30 to spend on whatever I like.
Roll on November when DH retires and I can stay at home.

crazygracieuk · 18/01/2012 14:51

What % pay cut is he advocating for MPs?

MrPants · 18/01/2012 15:03

He's a dead man walking.

Perhaps the public sector workers might like to withold their union fees if they need some extra cash - after all, it was the unions that put Milliband in that job in the first place.

EdithWeston · 18/01/2012 15:35

Is it a cynical ploy.

The opposition can't do anything about it for years anyhow, and it would be to his advantage to weaken the Red Ed label.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/01/2012 15:41

Oh dear. He alienates the public sector by making a statement that those in the private sector are likely to regard as bleeding obvious. Not going to win much support anywhere with that.

iliketea · 18/01/2012 15:48

Politicians are seriously taking the piss now. I work in the NHS, pay has been frozen for 2 - 3 years already, effectively a pay cut, plus taking more for pension.

Add that with the 'lovely' DC and his plans for the public services and it' just getting stupid.

If Ed Milliband wants to pay public sectors less, then I assume MP's would also take the same hit? ha thought not.

cory · 18/01/2012 16:15

Our local council workers - including dh- already have; they took a pay cut last year. They were then assured that this was instead of job losses. Now they are beginning to talk about laying people off...

GrimmaTheNome · 18/01/2012 16:29

Yes, if public sector paycuts were widespread then certainly MPs should take a cut.

The way it worked in my company when, during the 90s recession it was paycut or layoffs was that the CEO took a 25% cut, senior managers 15%, most other people (such as me) 10% and some junior staff 5%.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 18/01/2012 16:47

I've had a 3 year pay freeze too, and am starting to have months where I have to dip into my savings before the next pay cheque arrives. And for those who've fallen for Nick Clegg's bullshit about going up the pay scale automatically each year, my job hasn't had pay scales for years - my pay has been quite literally frozen for 3 years, while all my bills have soared at far more than the RPI (or CPI) rate of inflation. And a lot of parts of the public sector no longer have automatic increments.

niceguy2 · 18/01/2012 19:03

It's all rather academic. Ed's not going to be in power anyway so he can pretty much say what he likes.

As for a pay freeze, I've not had a rise in the last three years anyway and I doubt I'll see one this year. I told my boss in my appraisal that my objective this year was to keep my job. Anything else is a bonus really.

Mumcentreplus · 18/01/2012 19:16

here's an idea...if you are unable to pay me more ...how about cutting my hours instead...

wordfactory · 18/01/2012 19:49

Labour have been opposing every single cut proposed or implemented by the coalition.
It has got them precisely nowhere in the opinion polls.
The unions may rub their hands but Joe public understands all too well that horrible as it may be it has to happen.
And the Labour party needs to win back the general public. The middle that gave Blair his victories.

Milliband. Balls. Cooper. They're all getting on board.

40notTrendy · 18/01/2012 19:52

This is why I'm considering leaving the country. It's grim whichever way you vote!

Auntiestablishment · 19/01/2012 07:53

I wonder if he has a plan to get the unions to withdraw funding, so the Labour Party can be funded by rich individuals too.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/01/2012 08:26

This is why I'm considering leaving the country. It's grim whichever way you vote!

Where isn't grim at the moment? Maybe Australia or Brazil?

JuliaScurr · 19/01/2012 11:44

So, remember those banks the government nationalised with our money? The one getting sold to Branson at 50% cost? The one with the CEO with the £million bonus? Paid out of our money? Are any of them taking a pay cut?
Funnily enough, no.

KalSkirata · 19/01/2012 11:47

Arent MP's 'public sector'? Are they taking a pay freeze and pay cut?

CharliesNan · 19/01/2012 11:54

We're all in this together you know ....................

foglike · 19/01/2012 12:11

Everyone's fighting everyone.

Rich v nearly wanabe rich

Poor v very poor

Private sector v public sector

If everyone got their own way we'll never cut this deficit.

Let's just go to a computer terminal and switch the stock exchange off resetting everything to zero. After a couple of years in the wilderness some sort of order would ensue and develop into a society.

We've fucked ruined this one already and it doesn't look fixable.

This little diatribe was typed with my windows open and my curtains billowing in the wind listening to the citizen smith themetune.

StealthPolarBear · 19/01/2012 12:14

"If Ed Milliband wants to pay public sectors less, then I assume MP's would also take the same hit? ha thought not."

oh come on. Who needs nurses and teachers anyway. Whereas where would we all be without MPs doing their very important jobs of ... err...

feedthegoat · 19/01/2012 12:20

He is my MP and our LA (who I work for) has already voted for a 4% pay cut. Not heard him arguing our case so comes as no surprise to me.

The trouble is we have had so little in way of pay rises in recent years followed by freezes and changes to conditions that it is so much more in real terms. When the private sector were still getting bonus we were considering ourselves lucky if they offered 2.5 %.

telsa · 19/01/2012 16:37

twerp

GrimmaTheNome · 19/01/2012 16:40

When the private sector were still getting bonus
Please please please, do not confuse The City with the mass of the private sector workers. Most private sector workers get no form of bonus, have never had 'increments', and have had rises below 3% for several years (and in some cases, actual cuts already).
