Not content with earmarking £100 million to pay the guards for the jubilee party, bloody unelected Tories want us all to cough up for a fucking great boat for the queen. In THIS climate.

Read it and weep.

I'm so annoyed. Time to join Republic I reckon.

'greater achievement' my arse. well done on not dying, ma'am, and on all the funds you've leached off us to pay for your yachts and rebuild your spare castle when you burn it down....

She can buy her own fucking yacht!

Spidermama · 16/01/2012 18:23

I reckon the captain of the costa concordia should crew it.

love the comment 'The fucktard Michael Gove' is an anagram of 'Michael the fucktard Gove'.

also the comment about 'I'm glad we're all in this together because otherwise I might think a 60 million pound yacht as a gift to worlds richest woman is a bit over the top.

LineRunner · 16/01/2012 18:32

Even if the capital costs of this yacht were to met by charitable donations and public subscription, where would the revenue stream come from for ongoing crewing, maintenance and gin?

Spidermama · 16/01/2012 19:15

Indeed lin. Also, at a time of global economic crisis, job losses and a very painful economic climate for so many, it takes a right wanker to buy and flaunt a 60 million pound luxury yacht!

I'm afraid I don't for one minute believe this would be turned down either - I think the Queen has long seethed at her ungrateful subjects taking her first boat away from her and I'm sure she wouldn't bat an eyelid if the taxpayer bought her another one.

Wish I could emigrate for the whole of this hideous year of "celebration" - the best I've managed is a holiday in a European Republic from the 1st to the 7th of June Hmm.

Spidermama · 16/01/2012 19:49

I've had to start drinking early because of this story.

That'll never do. Too drunk to revolt? That would suit them fine.

Let's get her an Oxfam goat. It is after the all the ultimate in passive aggressive gifts for those tiresome people who have everything

hermionestranger · 16/01/2012 19:57

Apparently Prince Charles thinks this is a marvellous idea!

Funny that. Hmm

c0rnsilllk · 16/01/2012 19:59

Gove is after a knighthood

LineRunner · 16/01/2012 20:06

The Lib Dems will oppose this, if nothing else.

Spidermama · 16/01/2012 20:11

Channel 4 News seem to be ignoring this despite it trending on twitter all day and being all over Facebook. How deeply disappointing. (I'm watching on 4+1 and they didn't 'tease' it at the top of the show.)

I have to hope Newsnight will cover it properly.

Just had guilty look at daily fail comments on this- even there it doesn't seem to be going down that well (apart from with the hardcore failures)

Surely someone somewhere remembers that the Royals gave back a sodding yacht a few years ago. And cried more about it than P Di dying ffs. Unbloodybelievable that this would even be suggested during the years of cutbacks!! Perhaps even fewer people on the Civil List would be a gift to the nation.

OddBoots · 16/01/2012 20:57

I genuinely thought this was a joke when I first heard it, I'm still struggling to believe they could be that out of touch. I'm actually quite fond of the royal family but to use public money on this would be beyond the pale.

Pedallleur · 16/01/2012 21:08

The Queen didn't give back Britannia - it wasn't hers to give. It was a Royal Navy ship that in times of war would be used to ferry wounded officers forces personnel to safety, only it never seemed to get used for that as it wasn't 'suitable' or used the 'wrong type of fuel'. It also cost £11 million per year to run and the Navy was cutting warships and personnel and couldn't justify it's upkeep. Princess Anne allegedly wanted it sunk to stop the riff-raff getting on it if it became a museum. If the Royals want a boat, there are plenty for hire and lots of rich people eg Sheiks, oil tycoons and car park owners who can loan them one. Take a look at Sir Donald Goslings (he owns NCP) boat Leander, reckoned to be one of the best in the world and available for (I think) £250k per week

Spidermama · 16/01/2012 21:13

Or perhaps Charles could sell a bit of land to raise the money.

MmeLindor. · 16/01/2012 21:18

It doesn't matter if it were the Queen's idea, or Admiral Bawbag's idea.

The fact remains that it is absolutely the wrong signal for a government minister to send, backing a plan to buy the sovereign a £60m yacht when cuts are being made to government services.

FrillyMilly · 16/01/2012 21:19

It's not really a good investment is it. How much use is an 85 year old going to get out of a yacht?
