Twinkie, stop buying that paper! honestly, it's full of c**p! They often have that sort of drivel in there, suspect that one of the editors has his own agenda!

Norma · 13/11/2003 10:51

Couldn't agree more. I used to read that rag, and it is so full of subliminally an-ti women propaganda. It is sexist and class discriminatory beyond belief.

crystaltips · 13/11/2003 10:53

I have been buying the paper for years .... and having read this realise that it takes 5 mins to flick through it ... and then I spend the rest of the time on the crosswords ...
It d*mn well annoys me too !!

WideWebWitch · 13/11/2003 10:54

Twinkie, it's horrendous crap, stop buying it!

CountessDracula · 13/11/2003 10:55

It is the worst paper IMO. I remember when they brought out their new newsprint free ink and were smugly advertising that you could read it and not get dirty hands, Private Eye had a brilliant mock advert

The Daily Mail - puts shit in your head not on your hands!

How true

Twinkie, just buy Heat or OK. So much better for your soul IMO!!

Clarinet60 · 13/11/2003 11:04

Twinkie, I agree with you. I too have misgivings about these fathers groups and what could happen if the law changes. I feel sorry for some of the men at the forefront of the movement and think children should see fathers, but there are often good reasons for women getting the bulk of the residency.

handlemecarefully · 13/11/2003 11:04

Twinks,

I don't read high brow papers (take too long and too much thinking involved) but I understand that the new tabloid size Independent is actually quite good.

The Daily Mail is heinous - it is so utterly reactionary and bigotted. I would be more embarrassed to be seen reading the Daily Mail than I would to be seen reading the Sport on Sunday! I also makes assumptions about people who read the Daily Mail - if I see someone reading it I assume that they must be thoroughly unpleasant. Clearly this is quite unreasonable since this doesn't apply to you !! - you seem rather nice really!(impression gleaned from your posts)

Anyway, I read the Mirror - nice non taxing read with 'some' news (but admittedly lots of showbiz gossip), and sort of central left politics.

My MIL comes out with all this bizarre crap about immigrants and just about everything else. I used to wonder where she got it from until I read her Daily Mail one day.

The trouble with the BOb Geldof campaign etc is that it oversimplifies things and paints everything as being black and white when relationships are far more complex!

janh · 13/11/2003 13:08

Twinkie, just don't buy a paper at all, use the internet - all the broadsheets have brilliant websites, the Mail don't seem to know how to do it (except for Femail) so you can avoid the crap altogether.

I think your X2B is going to get a horrible shock when it comes to court, with or without Sir Bob. Chin up, girl!

lucy123 · 13/11/2003 13:20

Agree - don't buy it!

On the plus side (for you), there really is a slight bias in the court system towards women/mothers although in 90% of cases I think this is justified. Hopefully you'll get the benefit of it when you go to court!

PS did anyone else find the London spiderman guy's campaign pretty ironic? I think he may have lost his custody case due to being a nutter rather than because he is a man!

zebra · 13/11/2003 13:22

Yesterday the DM had a huge headline about women having to pay for C-sections. In the text they admitted that it was only some elective C-sections, and finally in the last few paragraphs they listed the increased risks of C-sections over vaginal births. But, they claimed, celebrities "choosing" elective C-sections was going to make them appeal to more and more women.

What, are we all sheep? And the celebs they mentioned (Victoria Beckham & Heather Mills) -- had decent or very good reasons to not even try for a vaginal birth (which DM didn't discuss at all). Paper ought to be burnt, I swear.

Zebs,

I'm having an elective c-section on pyschological grounds having been completely f**ked up by previous not so natural delivery. No doubt the Daily Mail would brand me for wasteing tax payers money!

Metrobaby · 13/11/2003 13:56

I can highly recommend reading books instead of papers on the way in. For one they are smaller, more portable and I reckon better value for money. Plus you can share a really good book with friends of yours, and IMHO, a bookcase in your home stacked full of books gives a nice homely feeling.

lucy123 · 13/11/2003 14:25

Thinking about it though Twinkie, you are right. There should be a support group for women in custody battles. I just had a search (having a day off! ) and there appear to be none in the UK. Maybe you should start one? I'll help with the webiste if you do!

There must be someone on here who actually likes the Daily Mail though. Doesn't it target itself as a female paper? Perhaps we should email this thread to them.

Must admit, I do tend to judge people if I see them buying it. Tend to think they must be a bit dim but would be horrified to be described as tabloid readers. Had a go at a collegaue the other day for getting it, his excuse was 'know you opposition' Not good enough, you don't have to help fund it!

I read The Times, The Sun and a local rag. I don't mind the Femail section of the Daily Mail, but you usually have to tolerate the odd 'I gave up work and am a MUCH better mum than you' article now and then. They like their scaremongering health articles as well which can be annoying 'Toxic Carrots' etc etc
