Welfare Bill in the Lords - what's going on?

So what's going on? It's front page news in the Guardian, has a tiny spot on the BBC news front page and is not mentioned in the Daily Fail at all, nor is it on the Telegraph website's front page.

It makes me really angry that the media seem to be siding with the Government en masse over this. Is it really the case that so few people in the UK give a damn about the way the most vulnerable are being targeted? Sad

There's a thread about it here

but yes, the apathy is overwhelming atm. Sad

Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but here's a surprisingly balanced article form the Daily Mail on Welfare Reform (no, really!)

threeleftfeet · 12/01/2012 00:28

Or a thread that mentions it, more like!

It should be a big story - the Lords haven't stood against the government like this in a long time have they?

YNK · 12/01/2012 00:33

Thank god for the House of Lords! I never thought I would ever be saying that either!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 12/01/2012 06:47

Listening to the R4 BBC news this morning, the Lords' objections to the Bill made the headlines. Then again, the House of Lords exists specifically to examine proposed legislation and suggest amendments.

You could also say that it isn't exactly front page news on Mumsnet either, even though this is bound to effect millions of mothers if not now in the future.

By the way for anyone that doesn't know Sue Marsh who was a co author of the Sparatacus Report is being interviewed on Newsnight tonight alongside Chris Grayling. For anyone who has not yet read the report which many believe was influential in the defeat of the Government in the House of Lords yesterday then go and have a look at the blog Diary of a Benefit Scrounger.

pointythings · 12/01/2012 21:39

rhuhama I think Sue Marsh is hero and I read her blog all the time.
It makes me Sad to hear the government say they will push this through regardless of how many times they have been told they are wrong.

It will probably mean the kiss of death for the House Of Lords Hmm Labour tried to get rid of them, how long will it be before this government try? Watch that space Sad

I'm relieved they've chipped away at the welfare reform bill.

Not sure what the next plan of action is regarding lone parents and when they're planning to vote on the universal credit proposals.

Am watching Newsnight.

I am so pleased that the government has found a cure for 20% of people claiming DLA.
it is a miracle, they are no longer disabled.
