Shannon Matthews being prepared for release

The Daily Mail are reporting that she is "planning move to Cyprus with wealthy secret admirer" which is clearly Mail claptrap as she wouldn't be allowed to move countries.

She is due to be released three years into an eight year sentence.

Apparantly she has been attacked a few times while inside personally I think three years isn't enough for what she did, she is lucky she is not serving a sentence for murder, that was luck for her, fortunate for the child but no judgement on her part.

Three years of an eight-year sentence tallies with guidelines. I don't like the woman but I don't expect her to be treated differently to anyone else.

What do you think about her being attacked while inside? My opinion is that however unpleasant she is no one else has the right to climb a few rungs up in the pecking order by attacking her. They are all in prison to be punished. I wonder what their attackers did to get themselves inside that makes them such moral arbiters.

Do you know for sure that it's a condition of her licence that she wouldn't be able to move countries? If it is, it's not going to happen so it's not worth worrying about.

Grin at the idea that Karen Matthews has an admirer, rich or otherwise.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 12/12/2011 14:01

Why is she lucky it's not a murder sentence? Wasn't the fake kidnap an attempt to defraud wellwishers rather than some more sinister motive?

sitandnatter · 12/12/2011 19:01

She's lucky it is not a murder sentence because by all accounts and subsequent documentaries her daughter didn't have long to live when found.

Would you like to link to all the accounts that says Shannon didn't have long to live and therefore her mother escaped a murder charge by the skin of her teeth?

Would you also like to link to the reports that prove Matthews cannot move abroad.

I've had a look at the report that said she's going to skip off to a life of luxury in Cyprus. It appears to be bullshit.

As I said, I don't like this woman, but she was convicted of kidnap and perverting the course of justice and has served her time according to the rules that govern everyone.

What do you suggest and how would you pay for it?

btw one of Matthews's alleged attackers was fellow tabloid hate figure Tracie Andrews who was convicted of murdering her boyfriend and pretending it was a random road rage attack. She's been released too.

Andrews is a murderer. In your world is she better than kidnapper Matthews, or worse or the same? I'd really like to know because you haven't said.

JoyceDivision · 12/12/2011 22:36

I mum worked at regional paper and it was generally believed that her daughter wasn't in a position of having long to live. The main concern was that the man who had her at his house was not able to contact Karen to sort out what to do with Shannon as he was holding her at his house longer than he thought he would have to and police thought he would eventually have had the potential to panick and take further action.

amerryscot · 12/12/2011 22:39

It's not Mail claptrap - they were relaying what the Mirror were reporting and pointed out that a move overseas was not possible during her license period.

JoyceDivision · 12/12/2011 22:40

''It's not mail claptrap - they were relaying what the mirror were reporting...''

hahaha!!! Grin

sorry, but there's a pot and kettle in there somewhere!! Grin

GypsyMoth · 12/12/2011 22:42

Never heard that before.... Didn't come out in the trial as you would expect!

GypsyMoth · 12/12/2011 22:42

( the bit about Shannon not having long to live I mean)

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/12/2011 08:03

If the little girl 'hadn't had long to live' then the charge would have been one of a violent crime, attempted murder for example, rather than what they were subsequently convicted of i.e. kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. Get your story straight OP and enough with the false indignance.

limitedperiodonly · 13/12/2011 09:25

joyce you can't charge people with offences the police or anyone else think they might commit, only what they actually do.

Seeing as the police had so much knowledge, according to your mum, I wonder why they didn't charge Matthews and her accomplice with something even more serious.

Did the paper write a story asking why the police didn't act on what everybody thought and generally believed?

Is the paper calling for an inquiry into the police investigation? Because if they failed to act on clear evidence I'd be asking why.

TheLightPassenger · 13/12/2011 09:29

I thought it was pretty well established that Shannon had been drugged to keep her quiet whilst she was in captivity, so at the very least her health was being put at risk, if not her life. It's mindboggling to think that vile woman would have any admirers.

Absolutely. Would recommend 1,000,000 times if I could.

JoyceDivision · 14/12/2011 23:15

limitedperiodonly, i'm quite aware you can't charge someone with something police think someone might do, thank you.

However, my commemt was in response an earlier post that Shannon was believed to have been found with not long to live. ie, it's claptrap.

SolidGoldStockingFilla · 14/12/2011 23:18

Oh FFS. What was the boyfriend charged with? ANd why isn't he a public hate figure? This is just moron-misogyny at work, like the sort of people who wanted Maxine Carr executed when all she did was lie to the police.

SolidGoldStockingFilla · 14/12/2011 23:19

And Karen Matthews was stupid, greedy, negligent and selfish, but there was never any intention to kill or seriously hurt her daughter.

limitedperiodonly · 14/12/2011 23:27

Sorry joyce what is claptrap? The belief that Shannon Matthews wasn't in a position of having long to live or that she was?

JoyceDivision · 14/12/2011 23:28

It's easier to attack Karen Matthews in the media because it's more shocking and a quick big news story to focus on the mother / daughter bond that's been betrayed rather than any of the male roles of the crime.

Her partner and the man who had Shannon at his property (was he an ex or a family friend or family member?) weren't going to sell as many papers as Karen.....

SolidGoldStockingFilla · 15/12/2011 00:21

I seem to recall there being some evidence that it was Karen Matthews' partner who came up with the initial idea for the kidnap plot anyway. This doesn't excuse her going along with it, but it does suggest that the hatred directed at her rather than him is down to misogyny.

xyfactor · 15/12/2011 01:05

Karen Matthews was a complete twat in this instance and no wonder she has so much hate directed at her.
Michael Donovan was even found with child porn on his computer and he's a vile sick individual.
But this poor girl was Matthews daughter and at no time has she offered this girl any protection. Hence the vitriol heading her way nationwide and it's justly deserved.

thegirlwithnoname · 15/12/2011 01:32

Ruby, what did you mean by 'I went to court at about the same time that Karen Matthews was sentenced. They were sentenced to 9 years in that case and they were recently released too - although no-one knows that and it has not been reported anywhere online.'
I don't understand?
