Radiation threat from Japanese imports.

Friends in New York tell us the authorities are very, very concerned about potential harmfull radiation levels from goods imported from Japan as a result of the nuclear power plant explosions after the sunami.

Car manufacturers in Japan have been trying to "offload" certain vehicles which they had in stock onto unsuspecting dealers and customers which contain dangerously high levels of radiation.

We were in thr process of buying a new Japanese car from a London dealer but pulled out when the salesman couldn't reassure us that the cars are being checked for harmfull radiation levels on entry to the UK.

Still it's not going to help if everyone is avoiding everything from the whole country, they are still trying to recover, how is ruining the economy over scaremongering going to help them get back on their feet?.

I'd like to think if Sellafield had another accident (Windscale anyone?) the rest of the world would not automatically shun all British goods for years to come.

Especially when their are so many other concerns, we have polluted this planet so much in so many ways.

Not suggesting a boycott just not prepared to take such a huge risk until the all clear is given.

Too many Jap cars on these roads anyway so not a bad thing if we buy European given the current mess etc...

The Fukushima plant was reported to be still in an unstable condition a few days ago. An uncontrolled fission chain reaction had restarted spontaneously and plans were being made to inject boric acid to stabilise it.

This is far from over. Japanese politicians being forced to drink Fukushima water on live TV as a sign of confidence is not a good sign.

ImpYCelyn · 03/11/2011 15:10

I think you mean "Japanese cars..."

Cortina · 03/11/2011 15:21

Quite, MoreBeta. Did you see how uncomfortable and nervous they looked about drinking it too? Not much news on the plant for the last few months. I've wondered about the health of the heroic men who stayed behind?

MoreBeta · 03/11/2011 16:33

I read that many of the men are ill and that people in the Fukushima area are in despair. The whole story will take years to come out. It is all been dealt with in a very Japanese way of sweeping behind a rice paper screen.

Similar thing happended with Aids infected blood products.

Why would anyone think this is over? Just cos it is not on the news everyday? Chernobyl is still an ongoing industrial incident site, as is Bhopal, various oil spill sites, etc Hazardous material accidents takes years/decades to remediate. That is not to say they are not being managed appropriately or to the best of the various organisation's abilities.

The Japanese situtation is more transparent than Chernobyl, as there are international bodies actively involved. There may well be media propoganda-type complications but the IAEA will be overseeing as much as they can & carrying out their own measurements, as they have done since very early on.

Spciy, I don't think leaving a car to be randomly checked is a massive risk - everytime you are in a moving car or near a moving car you are at a massive risk of being in a road traffic accident. That is a risk almost everyone is happy to take several times a day. If the contamination present on a car was enough to cause an immediate health risk it would be obvious - anyone coming into contact with it would be affected before it got to the consumer.

As Morebita says the Japanese have an inbuilt culture of hiding the truth which is all about protecting their pride(a male trait).

Remember last year Toyota sat on vital information their dealers were telling them about acceleration dangers, the cars just wouldn't stop resulting in 180 plus deaths, yet Toyota refused to acknowledge this failing and only acted when the government stepped in and demanded answers.

Thousands of motorists are now suing Toyota as a result.

I remember listening to that emergency 911 recording of that family seconds before the crash which claimed all 4 lives...the car simply would not stop no matter how hard they pressed the brakes and went faster and faster...makes me shiver even thinking about it.

Personally I would be more concerned about eating Japanese fish than worrying about an imported car.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 04/11/2011 09:00

OK we get it, you don't like 'Jap' (your word) cars because the Japanese are secretive, Toyotas kill people and the rest are radioactive.... So why were you entertaining buying one if that's the case? I'm sorry but I don't believe you any more. All your contributions with their urban myths, and thinly veiled racism are starting to sound like anti Japanese car 'buy European cars' propaganda by stealth.

ImpYCelyn · 04/11/2011 09:05

So actually your issue is with the Japanese car industry, and Japanese culture, as a whole then and has SFA to do with whether or not the cars are radioactive.

If you're so horrified by their attitude why on earth were you looking at a Japanese car in the first place? I doubt very much the reason you didn't buy it was a bogus concern about radioactivity in that case.

i think the only appropriate response is

wind yer neck in!

spicy1 · 04/11/2011 09:20

We were looking at a Honda CRV and happened to mention this on facebbok to our friends in NY who told us about the radiation concerns the US authorities were having.

As a normal mum who would rather her children did not get exposed to something as petty as radiation we asked the salesman a simple question, are your cars checked either in Japan or here in the UK which led to him getting pretty evasive.

Go and buy a BMW then, what do you want an off road looking thing for anyway are you forging over mountains on the way to school?.

Just remember all cars have electronics and computers in and god knows where that was made, better chuck the Satnav to the curve for a start and boycott Korean as well because they are close by, oh and Californian wine and fruit, could have been rained on by Japanese Kamikaze rain clouds.

In other news 9 people a day die on Britain's roads and air pollution kills 50,000 people a year.

Good day to you, I'll get my coat.

tromsharry · 28/08/2015 10:18

These are just rumors, nowhere or nothing nuclear infected in Japan.

cdtaylornats · 29/08/2015 11:09

I assume none of those people worried about radioactivity will be flying anywhere soon.
