Story here

Was wondering what people thought of this seeing as it's all over Twitter.

"Parents who named two of their children "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation" lost custody of all three of their children Thursday, even though they say a New Jersey appeals court found no evidence of abuse, ruling the children have been taken away without cause, MyFoxPhilly reports."

?Actually, the judge and DYFS told us that there was no evidence of abuse and that it was the names. They were taken over the children's names,? Heath Campbell told NBC 10 Tuesday."

"The case originated after the local ShopRite refused to decorate a birthday cake for the son, Adolf Hitler Campbell, and reported the incident. Adolf and siblings JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie have been in foster care since then."

And further down;

However, the appeals court ruled last year that sufficient evidence of abuse or neglect existed because of domestic violence in the home, and removed the children from their Philipsburg, N.J.home.

I suspect that this may be teh reason for the removal rather than the names.

TheVampireEmpusa · 27/10/2011 17:20

Ah, that'll teach me to skim read!

It's not exactly surprising that the kind of people who think "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation" are good names also have DV in the household.

Its stupid newspapers making sensationalist headlines that are to blame. "Kids removed because of household violence" isn't so much of a story.

Itsjustafleshwound · 27/10/2011 17:57

Fox news - say no more...

It is perhaps it is a similar to here, where ss can't really comment on the situation ...

notcitrus · 27/10/2011 17:58

They've been in the news frequently since birth with social services taking a close interest and the words 'violence' and 'neglect' mentioned near the end of the articles. So not exactly a surprise...

mayorquimby · 27/10/2011 21:47

Didn't this happen years ago, or am I suffering from De ja vu?
Either way, while it's clear that these parents are most certainly poisonous people who are unlikely to be great influences on their kids, I would worry about decisions to take children away from parents based on the ideals or morals they are instilling them with.
It's easy when it's something as overt as this and something which we can all agree on, but what occurs when it is something that a smaller majority agree is wrong but a minority do not?
I'd want to see how the guidelines and criteria are set out before I'd back such action in theory, while of course recognising they've probably reached the correct decision in practice in this instance.

"It's not exactly surprising that the kind of people who think "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation" are good names also have DV in the household."

What do you mean by that?

VivaLeBeaver · 27/10/2011 22:03

Yes, have to say that domestic abuse/violence can and does occur in all types of households.

TheVampireEmpusa · 27/10/2011 22:06

"What do you mean by that?"

Adolf Hitler and Aryan Nation? Sounds like they support really peaceful non-violent kind of people...

Surely the names have to be some kind of idea of a joke? I mean I don't see why it's funny, but if you really admired Hitler wouldn't you call the other one Mussolini or something? Not Aryan Nation. That's just weird Confused

KatieMortician · 27/10/2011 23:06

I'm not sure Hitler was a fan of Italians either Bertie.

Poor children. No anonymity and no loving parents Sad

TheVampireEmpusa · 27/10/2011 23:36

You cant see why someone who admired Hitler might chose a name like Aryan Nation?
(Is suddenly aware that I've just added both Hitler and Aryan into my phones dictionary Confused)

Isn't Adolf banned as a name in Germany?

hauntedstateofmind · 28/10/2011 01:38

Is it true that in some countries you have to choose names from an approved list?

This sort of thing seems like a good argument for having an approved list.

Poor children. They will be able to change their names once they are 18 but in the meantime how awful.

GohWee · 28/10/2011 03:17

In Denmark (and perhaps France) you cannot just make up names. Sometimes there are good reasons for having rules Smile

TheHumancatapult · 28/10/2011 03:37

Haunted yes it's true

nooka · 28/10/2011 05:00

The other kid is called something like Himler too. I've seen a few reports that say the parents are pretty damaged (victims of abusive parents themselves and I think learning disabled too). Sounds like a mess :(

I think in New Zealand some parents have been told to change their children's names or banned from using weird names after a spate of proper odd ones. I think a girl called 'Talulah Does The Hula In Hawaii' won a court batttle to change her name or something. Hang on I'll find a link...

Yep here we go - officials have blocked some names such as 'Sex Fruit' and 'Yeah Detroit' but allowed 'Number 16 Bus Shelter' ???!!!! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7522952.stm

Wowsers.

But IMHO, any parents who think it's acceptable to give their children names like Adolf Hitler are unfit parents. No question. I mean, what exactly would they have taught these children. What would these children grow up believing?

Poor mites, they'll spend their lives with people whispering: "Oh look, there's Brian. His name used to be Hitler."

bethelbeth · 03/11/2011 23:33

Oh that's grim.

Does anyone remember the Louis Theroux documentary where he met white supremacists in america? And there were two little girls in a white power band?
Kinda reminds me of them. sadface

New Zealand accepted Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence. But have drawn the line at 89. Lucifer, Duke and Messiah.

BookNerd · 07/11/2011 09:36

BethelBeth - Yes I remember that!! Lynx and Lamb - a very sad story.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they had turned away from it all now and had left their mother or something and said she'd brainwashed them all.
