Transport chiefs recommend people stay after work and have a beer to avoid Olympics congestion

Another brilliant, well thought out plan for the Olympics

I mean, it's not like people might have families to go home to, children to collect from school or child minders, have lives etc. etc.

Eeek! If I lived in London I would be booking my holiday for that fortnight!

MindtheGappp · 11/10/2011 17:31

Well, it's not as if children are at school during the Olympics.

It sounds like a great idea. If I worked in London, I'd probably join them.

But even if childen aren't at school, they still need collecting from CM/holiday club or whatever.

I have a feeling of foreboding about the Olympics...

AbsofCroissant · 11/10/2011 17:34

i'm dreading it. Seriously dreading it. A lot of the tube lines are packed when I leave work at around 7/8, without all the special Olympics traffic and clueless tourists.

It's going to be anarchy.

But no one is saying you have to follow the advice - it is just a suggestion. The nanny state is gone!

I would hate to be stuck in traffic congestion, so for me, I would want to avoid it at all costs. If this means catching some Games atmosphere for an hour in a pub, then great.

The article also suggested working from home and staggering work hours.

Not everyone has young children that dictate every iota of their lives.

If you do have to rush back for children at a fixed time, you should be hoping that as many people as possible are off to the pub to free up the roads/rail for you.

We've apparently had our university graduation delayed until October because it clashes with the Olympics. There's a student group up in arms about it, but I'm not sure they've really thought it through. Hotels will be expensive for families coming to stay, transport will be overloaded....

I plan to escape London, but I'll definitely join everyone in the pubs if not!

Forewarned is forearmed. There is plenty of information and time for businesses and individuals to plan for the Olympic fortnight.

I reckon the out of town locations will be just as busy as London, and maybe even more awkward as more people rely on commuting by car. The Olympics are basically commandeering entire roads as corridors for officials, athletes and spectator buses.

The opening ceremoney is July 27th and the closing ceremony August 12th. Sounds like the perfect fortnight to take your hols.

DH works in Canning Town (East London) so it will be a nightmare for him. He uses the Blackwall Tunnel everyday and that area will be the most congested I believe. I doubt I will see him much during that time!
