|Good on her. She was obviously a fit and active person pre-pregnancy and she took steps to keep that up during pregnancy.
It wouldn't be what I would of done but then i can't run. I did however walk a hell of a lot with all of my pregnancies. A long 6 mile walk helped me to start labour with dc2

I bet this kind of thing is a daily occurrence in many 3rd world countries, since the water isn't going to fetch itself.

Quite right cold truth....i ran till 36 weeks although admitly not marathons. If your body is used to running it's just normal. I had a 4 h labour and healthy 8lb 9 baby girl. I was running 3 weeks after. She was a difficult baby and running helped me so much... It kept me sane never underestimate. The power of running. Would do it all again if I ever get pregnant again.

It's always non runners who are the most judgemental..!!! I would have never harmed my baby. Although I has to be said she loves bouncing and being thrown around!!!

I' don't think it is a very sensible thing to do.A marathon places your body under immense strain and when you've got another life depending on that body, I can see how people think it is a bit selfish and irresponsible.

I cycled during my last pregnancy and this one. My students (16-18) were amazed. Quite a few thought that you weren't supposed to exercise when pregnant and that you should just sit and rest all the time. There's quite a lot of misconceptions about exercise in pregnancy. If her body was used to running then it won't have been too much of a strain. I'm sure like most mothers-to-be, she is capable of doing her own risk assessment and knowing when to stop.

I'm more confused by why she called the baby June when she was born in October tbh Confused . . .

Actually I am a jogger and I kept active in my pregnancy - walking, swimming gently

But this is a far cry from running 26 miles on a hard road when birth is imminent. No I don't think women should lie on the couch all pregnancy but there is a balance. I don't buy the idea that your body can do everything it did before. But then this is symptomology of the culture we live in - even pregnancy is competitive. There was a study that showed heavy exercise, particularly in the first trimester increases the risk of miscarriage. Why take the chance?

Yes they have to walk long distances in third world countries. But they also have a higher rate of birth trauma, fistula damage, maternal death etc. Not a good comparison

WoTmania · 01/11/2011 14:09

She followed her doctor's advice and only ran half of it and she has continued running throughout her pregnancy. I'm sure she would have abandonned the marathon if she felt ill or under physical strain. The baby was born a healthy 7.7lbs at term. I don't see the problem.

I'm impressed.

I'm sure she would have given up if she couldn't have managed the full 26 miles.

WoTmania · 01/11/2011 14:17

I just watched the clip and she said she had said she didn't plan on actually finishing just seeing how it went.
