Okay, not 100% on-the-front-pages-today current affairs, but I thought in the seasonal spirit and as an antidote to all the miserable stuff we get in the news I'd bump this bloody amazing woman who runs this organisation
In every feral, excluded, ASBO'd, media-damned 'devil child', she sees what lies underneath, and tries to give them something most of us and our families here on Mumsnet can take for granted, particularly at Christmas. I wish there was a clone of her in every town in the country...

Yes I agree, seen an article on her in the Times recently, very inspirational.

TBH I find it hard to read articles on abused/mistreated/deprived children, it always sets me off.

I know what you mean - there's another horrific one in the news today about a couple in Sheffield. At least they got those kids out in time. And at least you can offset those stories with the knowledge that people like Camila exist to try to counteract all the damage done...I'm a cynical, miserable old misanthrope at the best of times & I seriously don't know she does it.

I've heard her on the radio quite a few times, she's fab. Yes, let's highlight some non-miserable stories!

Enideepmidwinter · 21/12/2005 12:32

yes know this organisation, it is utterly fantastic

Blandmum · 21/12/2005 12:32

I saw a TV program on her, she is totaly amazing. So full of love but such a tough lady. Some of the children are so mixed up and violent they have a safe room that the staff can go into, to eacape from attacks by the kids! And every day she comes back for more. Astonishing

aelita · 21/12/2005 12:42

I confess I made a minuscule donation a while ago and got the most beautiful letter yesterday, with a card from one of the kids that reduced me to tears. If anyone wants to make themselves feel extra-good this Christmas you can do so via the kidsco homepage,

What an amazing woman. Makes me feel quite humble. Aelita, I will definetly give them some money.

wessexgirl · 21/12/2005 14:03

She is brilliant; I saw that programme, martianbishop, and couldn't get it out of my head. Will check out that homepage, aelita, and make a donation.

PruniStuffing · 21/12/2005 14:32

I heard her on the radio some time ago, but she's not easily forgotten. V brave woman.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 21/12/2005 14:33

she's fabulous
when I grow up I would like to be like her
I hope it's not too late

Hurrah! Thanks ladies. I hope I'm not going against what the board is supposed to be for by this obvious (though honestly spontaneous) fundraising, but they need over 2.5 million quid a year to keep going - just a couple of quid makes a difference to a child who has nowhere else to go on the day. To quote;

"This year, we are expecting some 400 young people. Teenagers will be bringing their younger siblings....Our being open on Christmas Day, enables them to look forward to presents, a meal & the companionship of staff & their peers. We all work hard to create an atmosphere of joy. It can never negaate the pain they feel, but it does cushion them against feelings of despair. To see children run through the gates with excitement is truly special"
