According to BBC News;

Saudi King Abdullah has revoked the sentence of 10 lashes imposed on a woman for driving, according to a Saudi princess on Twitter-AFP

Not seen it confirmed but I hope so.

I saw it. I am absolutely horrified that people can like the idea. what a cowering shitting tossing mysogenist.
DH was offered a VERY well paid job in Jeddah. He turned it down without a second thought.
I am hopeful that the women getting the vote will change things for the better. Sadly, I think it will take about 20 years before there is any change in KSA.

Yes, horrible. I don't think that I could move there either, Rips. Just the thought of it makes me shudder.

The tragedy in Saudi Arabia is that the oppression of women is supported cuturally by families that believe it is 'for their own good'. The legalities are almost by the by - the law could change tomorrow and the women would be no better off because their fathers and brothers would carry on as before. The other tragedy is that so many Saudi women support the status quo.

I am not a nation nor religion basher, but I will make an exception for KSA.
Poofy Paul my smoking cessation man and I were talking about this yesterday. He was a paramedic in the Kingdom. He was hugely frustrated by his job and the status quo and left . A lot richer financially but spiritually and morally poorer.
Twas a philosophical half hour we also touched on Buddhism Wink

I lived in KSA for a few years and while families might be complicit in suppressing women I think if the law was changed women would be booted out in a car to do the shopping without a thought if it made life more convenient for husbands. There are already 10 year old boys driving so safety is not a high priority, at least where I lived.

There would be quite a few woman on the roads in KSA immediately if the law changed. We lived in a neighbouring country and the Saudis would come over for the weekend and let their wives drive to their hearts content.
