Baby stabbed in bakers shop in Carlisle - v sad

Did anyone else hear this story?

A 10 month old baby stabbed to death in a bakers shop this morning in Carlisle.

It made me all tearful, and then they said that they think it was not a random attack, but was deliberately targeted, which really made me cry. The mother was injured but not seriously.

How can anyone hate that much?

Just seen it on teletext. Dreadful .

willow2 · 21/10/2003 20:09

I hadn't heard about this - and am now just sitting here wondering how anyone could do such a thing. Words aren't enough really some times.

lucy123 · 21/10/2003 20:13

The poor woman. The man is obviously unhinged though - hope they catch him.

tinyfeet · 21/10/2003 20:14

Don't understand - was the baby stabbed by father?

lucy123 · 21/10/2003 20:15

The bbc site just says "a 39 year old man is being questioned".

CnR · 21/10/2003 20:16

Oh my god. I haven't heard this story but it sounds truely awful. The poor mother. I gather the killer was known to them?

tinyfeet · 21/10/2003 20:19

Can someone post a link? DOn't understand how this could be deliberate.

gingernut · 21/10/2003 20:23

here is a link

tinyfeet · 21/10/2003 20:33

Oh my God, cant even begin to imagine that poor mothers pain. What a mad world we live in. Makes me want to go and give ds another cuddle.

handlemecarefully · 22/10/2003 08:44

There is a bit more in the press today. Apparently the man apprehended and questioned is, according to friends of the mother, an illegal immigrant due for deportation. So it sounds like he knew the mother and was probably the father?

I only hope that death was swift for the child. Its unthinkable really and I will never understand how anyone can hurt a vulnerable child.

WSM · 22/10/2003 09:30

Jesus, hadn't heard this. How truly terrible, made my blood run cold. What reason could there possibly be ?

What a horrible, vile thing to happen

chatee · 22/10/2003 10:51

i work on scotch street in carlisle and this has upset me so much-i didn't want to work last night i just wanted to be at home with dh and dd.baby was killed by father and mother is only 20, something she will never get over....
baby was 10 months old called Hassan Dominick Martin and if its any consolation to this evil act, he was unconscious at the scene so wouldnt have known what was going to happen iykwim.
when i finished work a friend and i read some of the cards and flowers, toys that are there and i was crying---its so sad....

singingmum · 22/10/2003 11:44

What possesses some people to do these things.Hope he rots for this.

CountessDracula · 22/10/2003 11:44

Can't bear the thought of it

WSM · 22/10/2003 11:47

It's tragic. What did the father think he was going to gain by doing this to a little baby (or anyone for that matter) ? I don't blame you Chattee, I'd have wanted to stay at home too

doormat · 22/10/2003 12:15

This made me cry last night when I heard it on the news,
what is the world coming to
very very sad.

GeorginaA · 22/10/2003 12:43

It's horrible - I wondered if he thought it would be better to be in a british jail rather than deported

shudder

lucy123 · 22/10/2003 19:36

Georgina I think there has to be more to it than that - a major psychological disorder. If it were just about being sent to a British jail then surely he would have committed some other crime.

I just hope people don't start using such an appalling tragedy as anti-assylum seeker ammunition.

GeorginaA · 22/10/2003 21:55

Well yes - complete insanity was going to come into it somewhere

Angeliz · 22/10/2003 22:01

chatee i was pleased to read that he was unconcious as obviously you think about how the baby suffered! It's just awful and makes me scared to be out with dd really

chatee · 22/10/2003 22:10

there's a four page piece in the local paper this evening and it's so sad-i read it after putting dd to bed(with so many kisses she started getting high iykwim)and i just sat in the chair crying.a book of condolences has been set up....that poor mum even had to endure identifying his body less than 2 hours after it happened and has had surgery on her hand/arm....words just can't express sorry
