As I understand it, in the future it may be possible to do living liver donor operations. Such a shame that time isn't now.

misdee · 11/12/2005 20:40

i hope they get news soon.

Hulababy · 11/12/2005 20:42

Oh, the poor little thing And how agonising for his parents.

I hope his miracle is found, but feel equally sad at what that also means for someone else.

The living donor thing sounds like a great thing.

calebsmum · 11/12/2005 21:21

another picture below, never seen such a yellow baby. Really hope this little boy survives

Um... I thought it was in fact possible to do living part liver transplants...?

tamum · 11/12/2005 21:27

You're right Soupy, loads have been done at the US.

tamum · 11/12/2005 21:27

at? In.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 11/12/2005 21:28

I was sure I'd seen it on a news article. The liver regenerates doesn't it? I assume neither parent is a suitable donor in this case though or is it not done in the UK?

tamum · 11/12/2005 21:30

I'm sure there have been a few. Maybe more problematical with babies though I can't really see why, they could just use a lobe. You can regenerate a liver from only a tiny part, they're amazing organs.

calebsmum · 11/12/2005 21:38

I'm sure someone offered part of their liver but the hospital said it couldn't be done?

Here is an update - it looks as if they found a donor. Good luck to them all!

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2005 11:24

poor little mite ... hope it's successful

popsycalindisguise · 13/12/2005 11:38

OMG I am in tears. Here but for the grace of god go I in my case.

DS1 was born three years ago with severe and prolonged jaundice and we were at the stage of undergoing serious tests and having top consultants called in when all of a sudden, despite serious phototherapy and rug treatment not working, he just started getting better.

Please register as a donor if you are not already

Hulababy · 13/12/2005 20:39

Oh, please let this work. Please let these parents have the best Christmas present ever.

BudaBabeInAManger · 13/12/2005 20:42

Oh fingers corssed. The poor little thing looked so ill in the photo.

BudaBabeInAManger · 13/12/2005 20:42

"crossed" even!

calebsmum · 14/12/2005 10:53

well he's survived the operation so hopefully he'll get better. Was thinking about him so glad they found a donor

Its wonderful they found a donor, but take a moment to consider what that donor was.. in all probability another child who was less lucky. Give a thought for that childs family too in your celebration of this lucky baby's good fortune.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 16/12/2005 20:39

It was an adult - but obviously your point still stands.

calebsmum · 02/01/2006 21:26

Hopefully he goes home soon!
