She's only making sure her baby is healthy IMO. Better than an abortion, surely?

hercules · 09/12/2005 17:21

Seems very sensible considering her history.

thecattleareALOHing · 09/12/2005 17:41

The dark one of of friends..can't remember her name due to lack of sleep induced senililty - was only able to have her baby because of PGD.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2005 18:05

Courtney Cox?

I don't see a problem with this, personally.

feastofsteven · 09/12/2005 18:07

I wonder if it would be allowed in this country? I would have thought not. I can see the justification for it.

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 18:10

Why is this a @western' experiment? PGD can help anyone with a genetic disease, regardless of where they live. And she is hardly a guinea pig, since this has been offered for quite some time now. It has been done in the UK. So the 'wicked west' isn't testing stuff out on NZ that it hasn't done at home.

If she didn't have a pre implantation diagnosis she would probably have another MC.

I on;y had one MC and that ripped me appart, good luck to this woman, I hope that she has a healthy and happy PG.

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 18:13

It can be done in 6 centres in the UK to screen for Cystic fibrosis. the embryos are tested prior to implantation and only those without the two defective coppies of the CF gene are implanted

feastofsteven · 09/12/2005 18:20

MB - I did think that it was permitted where there was a specific disease to screen for, just wasn't sure whether it would be permitted in these specific circumstances.

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 18:23

She has a condition that mkakes her 'reject' specific chromosomal markers in the child. In essence it is a similar issue. If not screened the child will be lost as a mc.

She isn't doing this to have a blonde blue eyes baby, just a live one.

feastofsteven · 09/12/2005 18:26

sorry mb, didn't mean to sound so obtuse!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2005 18:27

This isn't really any different from ordinary IVF - it has the aim of providing a childless couple with a live baby at the end of the day.

nzshar · 09/12/2005 18:51

"guinea pig for Western experiments" i actually see this as another thing that New Zealand is pioneering

I have always thought that New Zealands "go, get 'em" attitude a good thing.

Then again i havent lived there for 11 years ...hmmm oops

chipmonkeys37today · 09/12/2005 19:09

Sensationalist journalism IMO. It's not like she's trying to create the perfect baby, she just wants a baby. Good luck to her.

SueW · 09/12/2005 19:38

Not exactly pioneering though, just getting round to providing a service its citizens used to go overseas to get!

I agree with everyone - big deal. A complete none-news item.
