I just thought I'd bring this e-petition to the attention of anyone else who thinks its time the Government disclosed all it knows about that dreadful day.

thanks MNHQ, I didn't know that rule...I won't do that again. Thank you for keeping the thread, it is an important news issue.

I've signed it.
And, as an added bonus bumped it.

its been on the news that they will be released

going to be viewed by the families before the press

MigratingCoconuts · 26/08/2011 11:17

excellent news! Lets hope we finally get there, knowing the whole truth of what happened and show some respect to the families in giving them the knowledge they need for their grief.

This should have being released before 23 yrs. Its fucking disgusting. I have read the account of what happened on that day and i was in tears for most of it. The pictures are horrific. Specially the one which was on the Front of The Scum with the crowd crushed against the fencing. :(

I don't honestly think releasing the information will add anything to what we already know. I sympathise hugely with the families but they must surely know the 'whole truth' already... which is that football was such a toxic sport by the late eighties that their relatives were taking a risk just turning up. Because of running battles, stabbings and events like Heysel, we ended up with the massive metal fences that trapped people into stands, clubs cramming paying customers into shitty old stadiums with no facilities, and police seeing football crowds as troublemakers to be segregated & herded... not as decent people to be taken care of. Happened to be Hillsborough 1989 but could have been any stadium at that time.

MigratingCoconuts · 28/08/2011 18:07

yes cogito, that's certainly part of it but I can understand the families feeling as though there is more all the time the Government are reluctant to release the papers.

I would also add that I went to Anfield quite regularly in the eighties and your description of going to a match at that time is a little simplistic.

It may be simplistic but it's what kept a lot of people, myself included, away from football at that time and it certainly shaped the police/club attitude to crowd control. What will the released papers tell us?... who ordered the gates to be opened letting too many people in?... who told the ambulances to hang back because it could be a dangerous riot situation?... who advised pitch-side officers to ignore the dying?... Can't help thinking anything that is disclosed will only deepen the sense of hurt and anger rather than bring any sense of closure.

MigratingCoconuts · 28/08/2011 18:33

I disagree. The families (more importantly) disagree. I respect what they feel they need in order to bring some sort of closure.

What they feel they need is the right phrase. I'm very sure they feel that having access to every single document will tie up loose ends and let them move on but life is rarely that easy. 10/1 says the papers they see will raise more questions than they answer.... it's always the case.
