So, what rights are we about to lose because of the riots?

BornSicky · 11/08/2011 21:33

Been noticing some interesting suggestions from Cameron et al as to what they think will help prevent riots in future, and it occured to me cynical, moi? that the riots might very well provide the Tories with the opportunity to bin several of our rights and invent a whole bunch of other laws that they want to implement anyway, but can now blame the rioters for the necessity of their introduction.

So far, I've heard Cameron say that he wants to ban face masks or facial coverings in public if a person is "presumed" or "potentially" involved in a criminal act... so that will be the banning of the burqa to follow then?

and now, he's talking about the police and government having (easier) access to what is currently private data from social networking companies. For anyone that's followed any of the Twitter cases or those related to Wikileaks, this is potentially a very dangerous encroachment on privacy.

So, what else are we going to lose?

The right to protest?
The right to gather in numbers in a public place?

As someone who saw the introduction of the Criminal Justice Bill, I know just how much we lost last time have never got back, so this really scares me.

... and you missed the apostrophe.

Desiderata · 11/08/2011 23:06

.. and the capital letter at the start of the sentence.

usualsuspect · 11/08/2011 23:06

Tis the slippery slope to anarchy

MollieO · 11/08/2011 23:07

Can someone tell me what the people in JD Sports were protesting about on the civil liberty front? Was it that there were no sales assistants after store hours to help them try on their trainers and remove the security tags? (apparently these 'protestors' were doing both).

Is it a civil right to have a 50 inch plasma tv and a BlackBerry tablet? If so then I completely understand the purpose of these riots. Hmm

ChrisPBacon · 11/08/2011 23:09

If I felt that social networking sites would be shut down at a whim, maybe me & my associates would be setting up some ids here & there on sites with chat boards, for later use if I were a baddie.

Unless the entire interweb gets shut down in the UK I'm sure it would be possible to go into the pram section or other specialist area on MN, and say:

"Er guess what chaps, there's going to be a big popup Bugaboo/Labradoodle/Joules event at 10 pm Sat nite, Manchester Piccadilly/Bham bullring/Oxford st, bring Large Carrier Bags."

I don't think switching off Blackeberry messenger is going to cut it. Really idont.

All I'm saying is, check out HousePriceCrash the next time it kicks off Wink

Desiderata · 11/08/2011 23:10

Fuck me, woman!

'Tis the slippery slope ....

An apostrophe takes the place of something missing. In this case, it is ....

It really isn't difficult, much like global economics.

That's the trouble with Labour voters. Can't spell to save their lives.

BornSicky · 11/08/2011 23:14

mollie the rioters engaged in criminal acts.

I'm not saying that those who broke the law should not be punished using existing laws.

What I am saying is that because there has been a major series of incidents that are unprecendented in recent history, that the current government will use the fear and outrage felt by many to bring in what will be bad laws that will erode our civil liberties - as a direct response to the riots.

You know, I think poor old misguided DEs thinks this is in some way a Tory govt, with all this stuff about Conservatives believe in laissez faire etc.

Yes, sure they do. But Dave isnt really a Tory, is he?

MollieO · 11/08/2011 23:19

I don't agree with you but only time will tell if you are right and I am wrong.

Desiderata · 11/08/2011 23:19

Ohhhh, oohhh, Chris.

What the feck is he, then?

An alien?

MollieO · 11/08/2011 23:21

Mine was to BornSicky. No idea about DC's alien existence!

Solopower · 11/08/2011 23:23

Yes, it occurred to me, too, BornSicky. But tbh, what worries me more is that whatever 'tough' measures they bring in might make the situation worse.

That's not because they are the Tories, as the last Labour government would probably have reacted in exactly the same way (although Ed Miliband, from what I've heard is sounding more restrained so far). It's to do with knee-jerk reactions, which are very scary.

wannabefree · 11/08/2011 23:24

What's your problem, Desiderata? Have you been drinking?

You're awfully aggressive. If you can't get your point across without resorting to insults and correcting people's grammar/punctuation, then I really think you shouldn't bother. I couldn't even tell you what your point is, as I'm distracted by your obnoxious language.

Pan · 11/08/2011 23:26

Desi is well known for indulging in a few too glasses more than is good for her, get all morose and bitter, and then come on here, about this time, to chuck about her unhappiness by insulting people. Just best ignore her.

wannabefree · 11/08/2011 23:27

Thanks for the heads up, Pan. I like a good debate, but people like that really spoil it.

ChrisPBacon · 11/08/2011 23:33

He's nearly a kind of just about you know social democrat. Possibly. I couldn't be definite.

not sure about all you lefties thwowing your weight about and accusing people of being alcoholic piss head drunkards. Would you do that if you agreed with them? I mean, how about INTheNightKitchen on that other thread. Easy ride there, because it kind of chimed with what you like to believe.

What do you reckon?

mrsruffallo · 11/08/2011 23:37

Desi's language hasn't been that bad. I find her rather amiable.

wannabefree · 11/08/2011 23:45

Interesting, Chris that you think I'm a leftie because I'm a bit Hmm about somebody's lack of basic manners in a debate.

Must be a weak argument if you have to attack others.

As I said, I couldn't even tell you what Desiderata's argument is, cos she's too busy yawning, correcting grammar and insulting people.

mrsruffallo · 11/08/2011 23:51

I think she's funny.

ChrisPBacon · 11/08/2011 23:53

Dunno, I think it doesn't help hurling the drink accusations.
Fair enough if you aren't actually a lefty, I can see how that would be a bit embarrassing esp as they are supposed to be all caring about people with social problems.

mrsruffallo · 11/08/2011 23:57

Aren't most MNers a little drunk most of the time?

ChrisPBacon · 11/08/2011 23:59

"yawn" is unforgivable tho

mrsruffallo · 12/08/2011 00:04

Lots of MNers use the 'yawn' offensive. Myabe I have become immune.

Solopower · 13/08/2011 10:19

What I hope will happen (to get back to the OP) is that the people who were looting and committing other crimes will be punished fairly.

What I hope won't happen is that the police will treat peaceful, law-abiding protesters and demonstrators like criminals in the future.

sakura · 13/08/2011 10:28

can'T get over the fact they're proposing and actually implementing making women homeless to pay for men's crimes:
Mother of man arrested in riots is served with eviction notice

As I said on the other thread: Patriarchy, BE LESS OBVIOUS

Then you've got the woman thrown in jail for 6 months for stealing some chewing gum

While men are getting less than that for rape
