Looks like a strong police presence and the fact that people are going to jail may have worked. I hope so, seeing that there are consequences has hopefully made the looters think again.

I thought that about the rain as well: I am in Sheffield and I'm sure that the rain saved us: a hot night and I'd have been much more worried. Mind you, the thought of having to walk home up all those hills afterwards probably stopped a lot of people too.

What happens when those officers have to have their rest days/cancelled annual leave/go back to their usual base ?

I think it's scared a lot if them off, seeing their ugly mugs all over the papers and the Internet
They know they can't get away with it , it's all on CCTV
Like that wanker setting miss selfridge on fire and thinking he could then just blend into the crowd - CCTV soon picked him up
And seeing them all in court and their family and friends knowing their names, losing their jobs etc
Hopefully it's put them all off

The looting escalated because people thought they could get away with it. Now that the cells are filling, it's clear that they can't. I think shopkeepers are more prepared to go on the offensive, ordinary people are far less tolerant and the power balance has shifted. They talk about policing by consent... they have our consent... I think this has been a turning point

I agree with Cogito that, hopefully, this will be a turning point.

More discipline in schools will def help -- expecting kids to choose between playing computer games and watching MTV and swotting and doing homework was pointless. Some enforcement is required.

Also wish to point out that the whingeing about stop and search of black kids is unreasonable because it was probably increased to stop the stabbings and shootings that were going on (and judging by the lack of newspaper headlines appears to have worked). The police in a no win situation again.
