St George's day - Not Special - St Patricks day - is special.... ?

I was reading an article in the Metro Yesterday saying that a pub landlord had had his application for a liscence extension denied for St Geroge's day as the Judge ruled that St Georges day is "not special" however the same judge had admitted that St patricks day was special enough for a liscense extension to be permitted. And this was in England! Call me crazy but that just doesn't sound right to me. Why can't we celebrate both?

Now next year it won't make a difference becasue of the new liscensing laws - but what bothers me is that we're totally forgetting our national day here yet celebreating other nations. I agree paddys day is fun (I used to love it in the days I didn't get pissed just looking at a glass of wine)

Reminds me of the whole "festive lights not christmas lights" scenario...

I agree it's odd.

What about St Andrew's day? Is that special?

PruniStuffing · 03/12/2005 14:27

You mean you didn't celebrate it on Wednesday, aimsmum?
I had a fly whisky.

OK, I fancied a whisky and it happened to be St Andrew's Day.

It will be a national holiday soon anyway

Maybe the judge was Irish

Or I suppose it could be an Islay malt as opposed to the girly Speyside....

I've only once had a really excellent and memorable St George's Day.

I was in Barcelona at the time! He is their patron saint as well.

I came across a really good term for this sort of phenomenon (St Patrick's day being judged more important than George's day in England): cultural cringe. Think it expresses the embarrassment some officials seem to feel at any display of native culture as opposed to those of other nationalities (winter lights, for instance). Bet you no immigrants have ever complained about celebrating George's day or sending Christmas cards - it's all in the imagination of people who are convinced they have to be apologetic about being English/British.
