Watching him in front of the select committee.
He is a shambling, dodgy guy with the persona of a slighty stupid Arthur Daley. I wouldn't believe him if he told me the time.

Really? We promote blokes like this?

I too was shocked at the pomposity of Keith Vaz Shock

noddyholder · 12/07/2011 21:16

His OTT outrage was hilarious which I know isn't the point

AwesomePan · 12/07/2011 21:17

I thought Vaz was excellent as chair - introducing, bringing in questions, holding to time as best as possible, summing up, reflecting the 'mood'/views' of the cmte, and being quite levitous with it as well.

AwesomePan · 12/07/2011 21:18

I know! I thought panto season was on us early.

Pagwatch · 12/07/2011 21:29

He was very good Pan. Very measured and always in control.

Yy to the panto indignation. It was soooo staged.

I need dh to come home so I can rant at him about Hayman. I have rarely been so horrified.

The police force aren't exactly known for their MENSA members though - he's pretty typical.

I always thought Paddick was thick as shite too

pointydog · 12/07/2011 22:36

Many organisations are headed up by people who have shimmied and oiled their way to the top. Goodness, it's not the preserve of the police force.

Hayman just doesn't seem to give a shit, does he. He's brazening it out - like most people do these days - but he hasn't researched any good brazening skills.

pointydog · 12/07/2011 22:38

lolol @ pag's puppet/muppet juxtaposition

That is funny

AwesomePan · 12/07/2011 22:51

I have to disagree with you (again!) nancy - lots of senior police officers I have met are way beyond and above this one. Yes, as pointy indicates there are some who get to good places not through merit, but through slimying, or having something on someone, or having the nous to survive and how to 'flatter to deceive', and the other 3 cops on display weren't too bad..by degrees.

when Hayman was ask "so how many, on average, officers were on the investigation?" how many of us were thinking 'well, 10-12 at first to keep it discrete, then at the point of action 40-60 - it changes as the enquiries develop' - as Clarke had said not 40 mins before?
Hayman's response? 'er...whatever Peter said'. i.e. I couldn't even give a shit enough to listen to any detail which any and everyone who gives a shit would have heard and applied their special skills of memory to. Grin.

funny little piece by Simon Hoggart about this here.

frillyflower · 13/07/2011 08:38

"The only ones who can excel are the bureaucrats"

I don't think Hayman is even an effective bureaucrat. Just deeply stupid. It's that you should be worried about Niceguy, not the increasing PC-ness of the police force!!

Kind of compelling yet excruciating to watch. He was too thick to even be aware of how dreadfully he came across.

Pagwatch · 13/07/2011 08:59

Franke - That is the evidence to a tee. Great article!

I was beyond shocked by this last night too...even DH commented on him and he rarely chunters at the news (like me!!)

franke · 13/07/2011 10:00

I only saw the clips of him on the news last night, not the whole session and I was cringeing. His reply to woman who asked him if he'd ever been paid for info was toe-curling in its insincerity. It's gratifying that plenty of people got the measure of him though.

noddyholder · 13/07/2011 10:02

That is how my teenage son reacts if I accuse him of anything!

claig · 13/07/2011 12:13

That is how my DH reacts if I accuse him of anything!
DH thought Hayman was being perfectly reasonable!

claig · 13/07/2011 12:17

'Many organisations are headed up by people who have shimmied and oiled their way to the top.'

Do we have to bring the Labour party into every discussion?

I've just heard him on LBC. I honestly don't know what to make of it other than he is a dodgy fool.

frillyflower · 13/07/2011 15:18

Limited - he's blaming it on snobbery about his accent.

Dodgy moron!

TwoIfBySea · 14/07/2011 02:13

It was when he gave the "how very dare you" answer to the bribery question - what acting skills! Haha. He is as dodgy as a dodgy thing living in dodgyland!
