Given the breaking news regarding hacking\blagging\leaking of confidential medical records of Gordon Browns son will Mumsnet be targeting the advertisers of the Sun and The Times in the same way they so successfully did with the now defunct NOTW?

'And it's all our own fault. WE DEMAND THIS SHIT buying up stories of celebrities'

but isn't it far more serious than that? Isn't it about power, about trying to possibly hack phones of very high level people. The public just buys whatever they are fed, they are just pawns.

Purpleswimmingtiger · 11/07/2011 22:59

Social media including MN is gaining more and more influence on both big business and politics, to pretend otherwise is to bury your head in the sand.

People choose to be ex directory for all manner of reasons, whilst not in the same league as hacking, using a PI to unearth numbers people wish to keep private is very a grubby and questionable practice- way to go Nancy!
That anyone's 'phone is illegally hacked and info obtained is then published for commercial gain or used as a weapon against them is not only illegal but unethical and immoral, regardless of their celebrity status.

I hope more companies join Renault and boycott NI papers until this whole sorry mess is sorted out, the Sun is a scurrilous rag and I wouldn't loose any sleep if it goes under.

Ponders - yes we does not include everyone. But it is insidious. Ask teenagers what they want to be, no-one wants to be a train driver anymore. We are raising celebrity wannabees.

I'm starting a purity movement. I know bugger all about anyone famous these days. Works for me Wink

Claig - I disagree. There are some subjects that the public has shown distaste for. Don't bash the Thatch (Baronness Thatcher that is) for example. Don't talk about the police much critically.

And the irony of this all is, there's probably ten journalists around the world who have all the info to sink the whole bloody lot because they hacked each others phones.

\link{http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2013534/Rebekah-Brooks-rang-Gordon-Brown-say-Ive-seen-sons-medical-files.html\the Browns didn't know at the time how RB came by the information}

"'David Muir, one of Mr Brown's most senior advisers at No 10, said: 'They were contacted by Rebekah Brooks, who told them that they had information that Fraser had cystic fibrosis, which was a matter that they, the family, were just getting their heads around at the time and dealing with.
'And you've got to remember this is just after they had suffered the bereavement with Jennifer (the Browns' first child, who died soon after she was born) as well.
'They didn't know how Rebekah came across this information and now, what's come to light, it was obtained by what appeared to be illegal methods.'"

which makes sense - she's hardly going to say 'hey Gordon, we've got this information, by illegal means', is she???

Gordon Bennett

Nancy66 · 11/07/2011 23:37

that's actually a genuine friendship - not political one. Stranger things, eh?

Ponders · 11/07/2011 23:46

well it would have to be, Nancy Wink

claig · 11/07/2011 23:52

Maybe Gordon is a Daily Mail reader, and maybe Richard Littlejohn is another of Gordon's friends, because Littlejohn's views are said to mirror Dacre's most closely.

'Dacre's close relationship with Gordon Brown is a curious one, given that the Prime Minister epitomises many of the values the Daily Mail most detests, but it is well-established and, according to Brown's political allies, based on a genuine friendship. All their conversations are conducted privately, without aides or spin doctors present, and only Brown's wife Sarah and their two boys, of whom Dacre is 'incredibly fond', are party to their discussions. Dacre has been close to Brown since he was Chancellor, and shares his sense of moral purpose, despite disagreeing strongly on how the country should be run.

Of the Mail's many columnists, it is Richard Littlejohn, arguably its most provocative practitioner, whose views are said to mirror Dacre's own most closely and, like other journalists who are regarded as indispensable, he is paid handsomely.'

We know about the NOTW but what does this say about the politicians?

Tanith · 12/07/2011 08:14

It says a lot about some Mumsnetters, too.

Gordon Brown has his child's medical records hacked into, so that makes him fair game for more scandalous gossip and innuendo, does it? Hmm

noddyholder · 12/07/2011 08:32

He knew the records had been hacked though when he was wining and dining the murdoch brigade to further his political ambition and look what they did to him in the end!

claig · 12/07/2011 09:19

'so that makes him fair game for more scandalous gossip and innuendo, does it?'

I missed that bit, where was that?

claig · 12/07/2011 09:23

I think this all tells us about power and where power really lies. They all courted Murdoch. Not sure how much Murdoch courted them.

noddyholder · 12/07/2011 09:25

Murdoch was hugely pro Blair So what made him change his mind? Cameron needs to come clean about whether or not he indicated he wouldn't oppose the Bsky b takeover and also about what he really knew about coulson and why he still employed him at the heart of everything. It is a huge mess

larrygrylls · 12/07/2011 09:34

Who needs whom more, MN or NI? It seems to me that MN has a very cosy relationship with the Murdoch press. There have been several full page articles promoting the MN parenting book in the Sunday Times. In addition, at some point MN is going to cash in on its success with some kind of sale. I suspect they will want the Murdoch press on their side when they do.
