teej I must be looking at the wrong page of News24 as I can't see what you mean, but I gather they have a cunning juxtaposition of images? :o

Yes, that is odd, about the favourite daughter/fifth daughter thing, isn't it? And Wikipedia is scanty with regard to her early years. I don't suppose it would do for any respectable journalist to come out and say it, though. Elephant in the room. Libel laws.

Nick Davies' summary of Commons committee today.

butter no, sorry for any confusion - lots of posting on different topics. what I meant was that one of the tabs has a pic of RM as Mr Burns Grin

but wrt what you were saying re them looking similar - RB almost looks more like RM than JM.... but probably just dogs and their owners as was said!

Can't believe the front page of tomorrow's Sun trying to justify what they did breaking the story of Sarah and Gordon Brown's son's Cystic Fibrosis. Any parent, Prime Minister or not, has the right to privacy in such a situation. I don't buy the Sun becaue of their coverage of Hiillsborough but I'm not going to buy its sister papers now - the Times and Sunday Times and I'm even thinking of cancelling Sky. I don't want to give any more money to Rupert Murdoch and his empire and well done to Mumsnet for cancelling your deal with Sky. We need more people to put their money where their principles are.

LucaBrasi · 13/07/2011 00:11

This NY Times summary is good too, and the scandal has def reached across the pond

Murdoch - A Portrait of Satan
www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/2011/01/rupert_murdoch_-_a_portrait_of.html

Just scanned this bt it looks very interesting, published in January (will do it justice tomorrow - need to go to bed now!!)

LucaBrasi · 13/07/2011 00:21

teej
I cant get the Jon Stewart link to work. Which one did you use? I would love to see it

teej · 13/07/2011 00:26

luca are you using the Gawker link?

gawker.com/5820243/jon-stewart-tackles-the-news-of-the-world-scandal

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 00:28

Here's Luca's link clickable: RUPERT MURDOCH - A PORTRAIT OF SATAN

Despite the melodramatic title agree this is well worth a read - and a watch. Lots of interesting clips of Murdoch since the 60s.

teej · 13/07/2011 00:31

need to go check my laundry while no-one's looking and get some shut eye. i leave you with this
go to 10 of 12 if it does not go directly to the Mirror front page

LucaBrasi · 13/07/2011 00:32

teej Yes thanks, but no play button coming up - weird!

ThisIsANiceCage Thanks for that - used to another site which automatically recognises links.

LucaBrasi · 13/07/2011 00:35

Teej Ha ha haYes, saw it on newpapers reviews - bloody brilliant!

Although you are using dubious sources!!!!!!

teej · 13/07/2011 00:41

Grin i know luca but it's the only place i know where they have the front pages! i even tried the mirror's own site and was confronted with a load of zleb stuff that frankly i just don't get

teej · 13/07/2011 00:42

Luca - re the JS clip maybe try refreshing your browser or using a different browser?

hammybobs · 13/07/2011 03:57

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14126326

Andy Hayman's response to being asked if he was paid by NI, prior to becoming a paid NI employee Wink

Dunno about anyone else but me thinks the Hayman doth protest too much! There was also a clip on the news earlier (not linked on bbc clips) of other parts of his questions, and the fact that he had dinner with NI executives while heading the investigation into phone hacking. I think his response was something along the lines of 'it would look more suspicious if he didn't accept the invitation to have dinner'. Hmm

frillyflower · 13/07/2011 07:06

I agree Hammy. It was one of the most insincere and hammy (sorry!) pieces of theatre I have ever seen.

chipstick10 · 13/07/2011 08:09

Im really sorry but i have to disagree. Why should the sun not be able to challenge the story put out by the guardian.? I dont read the guardian but they put out a story i believe quoting Browns solicitors ect and yet they are not even Browns solicitors, so iffy to begin with.

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 08:29

chipstick What's not iffy is that the Sun published a "scoop" on the medical condition of Brown's child which is blatantly not in the public interest and was wholly reprehensible. That the paper has now found someone to claim they gave the details and that they weren't achieved illegally is just more guff.

Brown was pressurised and demonised by this mob for a long time and, as another person pointed out, when he was at his most vulnerable after receiving the diagnosis of his child's severe medical condition. Brown has always been awful public speaking or communicating and he didn't make much of a PM, because he totally lacked charisma.

But, to use Brown's other failings to argue away the bottom line of the Sun's awful churnalism is tabloid-esque sleight of hand. And these kinds of misdirection are exactly the reason why so many people have had enough of the tabloid media.

mumof2teenboys · 13/07/2011 09:10

I don't understand why the person who gave the details to the sun felt the need to do so. Surely if he is a 'family' member, he would have understood that the Browns' needed time to come to terms with the diagnosis. Not gone running off to the papers with the story.

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 09:23

love the mirror's headline.

do you think tomorrow's might read: "It was The Sun wot done it!"

AitchTwoOh · 13/07/2011 09:38

look at page 12 of that newspaper front page thing... Daily Mail puts the murdoch story into a rhs col, no photos, smallest thing on the page after sexist bullshit about mrs clegg, some crap about eco money and an article over posh having a fourth cs. that is bonkers. see why i'm so narked that they are getting away scot free?
