Are any of your kids' schools staying open on 30 June? And how? Ideas please!

Just wondering if any schools are staying open and how?!
I appreciate there might not be lessons as usual (and I think that would be the point made in terms of the strike), but are any schools drawing on other resource like parents, governors etc so that kids can still go and the disruption is minimised? Am planning to pass on any ideas to our schools (will be a major logistical issue for us if they close!)

Letter home today, school is closed.

DD's secondary school closed although hoping year 12 will not be too disrupted

Can't they just do outdoor activities for the day, using what teachers are bothering to come to work, along with any parents who want to volunteer to help?

elphabadefiesgravity · 23/06/2011 19:23

Teachers in other unions are not allowed to cover for absent colleagues.

pooka · 23/06/2011 19:26

School open only for those classes ith non striking teachers - 4 out of 14.

Primary though, so different kettle of fish to secondary.

RobF · 23/06/2011 19:26

Wouldn't be covering for them surely, if the day is just outdoor activities instead of regular lessons?

elphabadefiesgravity · 23/06/2011 19:30

It would be classed as covering if they were supervising children from a striking colleagues class. Besides ratios for outdoor activities I guess are quite high.

pooka · 23/06/2011 19:31

rob Would be, if you would be supervising pupils ordinarily taught/cared or by striking teachers.

Dd's teacher working but she will be off anyway because of post-op recovery. Ds1s working too. But don't think will send him. School not putting absence own as unauthorised. And I support the teachers' decision to strike.

RobF · 23/06/2011 19:32

Couldn't the school just declare it an activity day, which they often do at this time of the year anyway?

All the various rules such as this are ridiculous IMO. When I was at school teachers used to cover each other's classes all the time.

elphabadefiesgravity · 23/06/2011 19:33

There are new rules which have been imposed on the teachers now about "rarely covering".

But no the school can't just declare an activity day just like that at short notice. These things take a lot of planning.

All but two of my sons teachers are working . So two classes will have to close.

But it is a special and strike action in special school is particularly damaging and cruel, however strong the cause.

I am impressed so many are working.

My DD's school is open, not sure how. She is most displeased Smile
