Daily Mail (sorry) story on Haemophilia, and how

DM online

A story which gives a completely skewed view on what it's like to live with the condition, and some awful comments about the boys' parents. How could someone think or say such horrible things about another person??

I'm fairly sure that this report has twisted some of the comments supposedly given by the mother, she would know a lot of what's been reported isn't fact, as it's conveyed in the story. For example, it suggests that all haemophiliacs are wheelchair-bound by adulthood. While it is a possibility, it's not definite.

Also, a graze or bruise is more often than not just that - they're not all life threatening. This article gives the impression that a haemophiliac child's life is constantly in danger Hmm - not really the case. If they're out running around they do have an increased risk of injury, and if they did fall they'd need more urgent medical attention than most in a lot of cases. But once given their specific treatment they can be treated the same as anyone else (wrt injury). The comments below the article suggest that people have got the impression that this mother has deliberately passed on a disease that will lead them to certain death by daily living (ok, maybe a bit dramatic but you get the point). The reality is that the children need more supervision than most, with which most injury can be prevented or treated early enough that damage isn't long term.

Anyway, apologies for the rant, I'm just extremely wound up by this Angry

It was an absolutely terrible scaremongering and judgemental article I agree.

I think there are moves afoot to write to the DM to try and correct some of the inaccuracies by the Haemophilia Society and others.

Thanks for your message flicka Smile I was beginning to feel like I'd just gatecrashed the topic to rant like a madwoman!

I have seen some mention of several things on facebook (which is where I got the article link originally), so hopefully there will be a publication of some corrections. An apology would be nice too, but that may be a bit too hopeful!

Hopefully they will publish letters which I know are being sent but I think you are right about it being too hopeful to expect an apology...Angry
